I'm not having much joy on these 'minor' MoT jobs, am I? Just had to go out and buy new pads for the rear, as although the thickness of the old ones was very good, the backplate had corroded in one corner to the point of separating the pad itself from it. This is still on the first corner, mind... my current problem though is that the N/S/R brake hose is semi-seized up where it meets the brake pipe, so instead of undoing, it spins the nut on the brake pipe itself. I though the bracket it's on would hold it but after I got a spanner on that to stop it flexing, the whole pipe junction started to spin, so I was worried about twisting the brake pipe until the other nut started spinning too. The brake pipe nut is a bit too small to get a good grip with the force needed to undo the hose and the bit below it has a partial cover which prevents the use of grips on the body of it. Anyone got any winning tips or techniques in how to get around this, short of replacing the brake pipe at the same time (or at least the end of it)? |

one thing to consider is a new kind of spray which is a form of anti-seize spray. it's basically a spray that combines a penetrating lubricant, and a freeze spray. like, you know those hand held cans of air spray? if you turn one of those upside down, it sprays out frost? this is a combination of that frost and lubricant, which acts to un-seize rusted bolts. you can use that on the line. or get a benzomatic torch, and pre-heat the connection before working on itl. then have a friend grab the brake line on the car side with a pair of 'vise grip' pliers. then use a 10mm wrench for the brake line end. i had hte same problem. if you break the car side line, you will have fun replacing the entire brake line all the way to the engine bay. you will also have fun buying the line from mercedes, and bending it yourself using a hydraulic pipe bender |

Thanks Sev. I'm going to have another bash at it now... I left it soaking in penetrant and the whole car was frozen when I came out first thing! I got friendly with one of the local MB mechanics yesterday, after giving him some beer money when he found me some odd bleed nipples out of his tool box and he offered to make me up any brake lines I needed if push came to shove. I'm about to go out and invest in a bunch of brake spanners and other normal ones to see if I can get a better purchase on it first, anyhow. Fingers crossed, eh? |
