Check procedure (from pentoman)

Open bonnet
Check ASD computer is installed (in front of the battery possibly under a plastic cover)
Find rectangular diagnosis socket near the battery
Find pin 5, it has a big number 5 on it
Start engine
Connect wire from pin 5 to ground (this is for reading the fault)
Hold it there for 2-3 seconds
Release
The ASD light goes out, then flashes on a number of times
Count the number of times (there's a list of how many flashes mean what somewhere)
Connect wire from pin 5 to ground, this time for 10 seconds
This will clear the fault from the memory
Drive the car around. The light will almost certainly come back on, indicating the fault is still there

Note that the clearing fault step must be done after first reading the fault

flashes mean;

1 no error
2 ASD computer broken
3 break light switch broken or wire interrupted
4 no revolution signal from front left wheel
5 no revolution signal from front right wheel
6 no revolution signal from rear axle
7 no revolution signal at all
8 magnetic switch or break light switch broken

simple :)

We used to have a pinned topic I thought? Maybe not. Good thought!!

It's clear from the circuit diagram that 8 flashes could also be... der-di-der.... the OVP! And probably is the OVP especially if your cold running is crap or idle is way high (1300-1400rpm)!! I've replaced OVP to fix 2 ASDs so far on a W201 and W124 so I'm pretty confident. So let's add that too. And yeah remember after fixing the problem you have to read the code again then clear it immediately afterwards or the light will stay on and you'll be thinking you never fixed it.... d'oh.

Indeed you would need to be a mole to miss it.
