Rocker Cover Gasket

I have a small oil leak coming from somewhere near the top of the engine.. there is a small semi circle of metal that sticks out (2.0 engine) and it keeps filling with oil. Also oil has run down the side of the engine.

The only thing I can think of is the rocker cover gasket, I am guessing it is not too hard to remove the cover and replace the gasket?

the rocker cover gasket, also known as the valve cover gasket, is an easy job. just remove the valve cover, remove the old gasket, put some red or black rtv on the new gasket, and reinstall it. the round hole that keeps filling with oil is the blow-bye valve which is supposed to have a hose attached to it, and connects it to the air filter housing

I'm only really here for the Kitchens

I dont know the 2.0 specifically but it should be dead easy. 6 small bolts and thats probably it. You can normally leave the rubber breather hose attached, lift the cover and change the rubber and put it back down. The bolts dont need to be torqued and dont need to be particularly tight. If the ht leads run over the top of the cover on the 2.0 you will need to remove them from it but shouldnt need to actually remove the leads.

Someone with a 2.0 will be along in a minute to confirm.

Best to do it after the car has been sat for a little while so the oil has drained down and best if it isnt windy or raining, when I was working on mine I ended up picking bits of twig out of the rockers because it had been blown off the tree above :)

Are you sure it wasn't the twiglets you were eating at the time Kenny? :D

But yes, rocker cover gasket is easy to change. Sounds to me like the likely candidate. And yes oil will collect in the semi cirlce bit at the front of the engine if the gasket is not doing its job properly.

I had the exact same little leak at the front of the cover, into that little 'well'.

This is indeed an easy job, and worth buying the gasket from your dealership if possible.

Once you've removed the rocker cover, the old gasket just pulls out and the new one presses in.
I'm not sure what Sev means by 'RTV', but I just wiped a little oil on both surfaces of the gasket before pressing it in.

Lowering it back down onto the engine, check that it's properly seated all the way around before bolting the cover down.

I too have oil collecting up in the little semi circle now and again, I'll put it on the 'to do' list. At the moment I'm driving a hire car, my ball joint on the passenger side sounds like its going to pop out, I'm getting it fixed before anymore driving

Thanks for the replies everyone! Looking forward to do little jobs on the car like this.

Whilst it is off I might paint it up with some black heat resistant paint :)

mdavison: You should remember that you'll need a torque wrench for when you put the bolts back on, I can give you the correct torque settings if you require. Also, there is a pattern in which the bolts are put back on to ensure that the cover sits square (if you need this let me know). As Neil correctly said you can run a finger with a little oil on the rubber mating surface of the seal to ensure it sets properly.

Good luck, its fairly straight forward!

I should be O.K with the bolts, I looked it up in the Haynes manual (although I couldn't find it at first because they list it under Cam Cover)

Need to buy a torque wrench with a lower range of NM though. Which is a pain but then I guess the tool is always there for the next job!

The Haynes manual is mentioning these disc bits when I remove the cover? What are they on about?

Will need to do it today because I have lost 1ltr of oil in about 500 miles.

I don't recall seeing that in my manual! I'm at work so can't double check my manual....

I hope you're checking the right section!

If you don't get any more joy with the manual let us know and I'll try giving you a quick few tips on how to do it.

iirc the disc bits are to stop the gasket compressing all the way.

Are they a detached part from the cover or cylinder head?

when you get the new gasket, there should be a wee bag of these discs. They go into wee holes in the gasket so when you tighten it it bottoms out on the discs and not the gasket. If you get what i mean.

Just saw the picture of the gasket above.doesnt look like there is any o the wee discs meant to go on.Must have been other rocker gaskets i thought of.In fact its cork gaskets the discs are used to stop quashing the cork.

Alright have run into my first problem.

Managed to get all ancillary parts off and away from the cover. Undid the cover bit it won't budge.

I have been told to use a rubber mallet to get it off, there isn't really any material to hit the underside of it with. How do you reckon I should tap it off?

If you have a small bit of wood, just go round the edges of it, tapping through the wood with a hammer.
It will come off, but remember that it has to come off vertically, so don't expect any visible lateral movement.

Ah you come accross a stuckun, as I like to call it  Yes give it a few taps with a soft mallet at various places, to loosen it off.

Looking for a gasket for a 1.8

Could anyone confirm for me please that this is the correct gasket? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mercedes-Rocker-Cover-Gasket-M102-Petrol-Engine-1020161221-4-Cyl-190-460-124-123-/120789459497?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1c1f9ce229

They are under £10 from MB. Either order from MB parts online or simply trott down to your local dealers.

Why are people so eager to spend more on ebay when the parts are cheaper from the bloody dealers !!

I'd stay away from some of the over priced ebay stuff, do as Stu says and go to your MB dealers parts dept. it will also come with a 2 year guarantee. :)
