Hello

Right folks, it's time we sewed this one up once and for all.
These wheels are a very, very popular upgrade for our cars, and the same old questions pop up time and time again.
We should endeavour to collate all known info on them, into ONE thread!
Please feel at liberty to contribute related facts, figures and pictures as you see fit.

Do not spam this thread, it should serve as a guide.

Original Equipment
These wheels were supplied as original equipment by Mercedes-Benz on the following vehicles:
W201 190E 2.5-16 Evolution
R129 300SL
R129 500SL
R129 SL320
R129 SL500

Part Numbers- These, like many other MB part numbers, are updated at will and without notice.
There is more than one Part Number for these wheels, but the design & construction remained the same.
A 129 400 0102

Rim Dimensions
Diameter : 16 inches
Width : 8 inches
Offset : ET 34
Markings : 16x8J H2 ET34

Bolts/Lugs - There are at least two known Part Numbers
Original : MA0009901007 - Long-Shanked
Replaced by : MA0009904807 - Short-Shanked
Also : B66470101 - Set of 5 Long-Shank Lugs with Polished Heads, 1 Tyre Valve & 1 Plain Silver Centre Cap (possibly now discontinued)
All numbers may be found if buying New Old Stock (on eBay, for example)
Locking Lugs : awaiting information

Centre Caps - 75mm Diameter
Originally supplied with 'plain' silver MB Star centre-caps (no chrome) - awaiting individual Part Number info for those.
Other options include the Blue Wreath or Black Wreath 'Roadster' centre caps, or
B66470202 - Silver with chrome 3-pointed stars, as in the picture below:

Recommended Tyre Sizes & Brands
225/45/16 is generally regarded as the ideal tyre size to make the most of the 8-inch rim width, and sufficiently clear the arches on even mildly lowered W201s.
215/50/16 are technically the same rolling radius as the OE 185/65/15 tyres supplied on many W201s, but they do cause a tiny bit of rubbing and are not recommended.

In terms of brands, users on this site have so far expressed positive feedback from:
Continental Sport Contact 2
Toyo Proxes T1-S
Kumho Ecsta Sport KU31
Kumho Ecsta Sport 712

A small point - I bought short-shanked lugs on that 1007 part number in April 2008, which is probably why they changed it to 4807, to avoid confusion. But as I pointed out on another thread, if you buy (e-bay) on part number alone, you therefore might get either.

A few people on here have been a bit rude about Avons, but think about them. I couldn't find a Michelin in that size, btw, but that was only an over-the-counter request. Also Fulda, but uncertain about availability.

Looks like I have the last of the Long-Shank Lugs with Polished Heads! B)
I orderd B66470101 - Set of 5 Long-Shank Lugs with Polished Heads, 1 Tyre Valve & 1 Plain Silver Centre Cap (Thanks to neil)
and this is the email I got from them;

Hello Sir

Part number A2018310225 is here

3 of the 4 wheel bolt sets are here , they are now discontinued but I have located 1 from another dealer and am awaiting delivery.

Regards
Domenico Aquino.

So I think this may be the last of the new oem lugs, as the part number for just the long or short shank lugs do not work :ermm:

Also Fulda, but uncertain about availability.
I've got my evo 1's on Fulda's in the aforementioned size. I managed to get the rims with the polished lugs too. Also got a brand new set of all-grey centre caps if anyone is interested in having them. I've no issues with the Fuldas, however - I've not pushed the car with them as much as I have with the P6000s, so I'm afraid I can't give an in-depth opinion about the tires, but generally they've been ok. Oh.. they make a little more noise than the P6000's, not fair to compare different sized tires TBH.. oh well...

Word of warning: if your car has a 60mm drop up front with a Cosworth kit then avoid 225/45/16... you will most def. get rubbing issues.

Hiten, think its only on your mate, you might have to go for 215/45/16's

Jeremy's on 225/45/16's with no issues

Had no problems getting Fulda's 225/45/16. Seem to be good alround, after 6k mls not showing any excessive ware and reasonable cost.

I think its a combination of things that happens to be unlucky for hiten, Plus from experience not all 190s are exactly the same, which is why people are a tad cautious about advising about rubbing when its a close call :)

Question: Does anybody know the difference in weight between the original 15'' (forged) alloys and the 16'' ? I presuming the 16'' are not forged and I think Neil would be in agreement.

True say..

I looked through many pictures and also did a quick measure the other day and I think I'm one of the only guys with a 60mm drop running that rim and tyre combo.. Have a look at the pic below, the gap between the tyre and arch is really small.

From visual inspection the other day Jeremy's car looks much higher than mine.

I've just weighed one of the 15" Cosworth wheels and it looks like about 7 kilos without paint. I don't have a tyre-less Evo 1 at present for comparison but, iirc, it is much, much heavier, possibly by as much as twice. Technically, the forged 15" Cossie wheels are hugely superior to the cast Evos - stronger, lighter, denser; I don't know whether the metal is magnesium elektron, but they are about three times the price!

Robert if you do get the chance please weigh the 16''.

I'm not convinced the EVO wheels are the best way to go even if they look good. May change back to 15'' to feel the difference as an experiment.

Longterm it might be a question of EVOII (don't know what they weigh either) or some other lighter wheels. I really like the 16'' just a shame they are not lighter.

I think it's surprising that they didn't make a forged version of the EVO1 for the EVO. Shame because they look so good.

Oh btw mine rub very slightly on full lock (standard suspension).
