obnoxious gases from exhaust

I've recently bought a 1990 non-cat 190E 2.6. Absolutely fabulous condition inside and out. It's done 152k. It's been very well cared for by an engineer. The problem that I have with it is that the exhaust pumps out seriously horrible fumes. At tickover the fumes are there, and they spread under the car (possible due to an after market exhaust: the rear pipes turn down to face the road rather than directly behind the car: is this how standard exhausts exit the car?). The fumes are definitely not oil, just pure exhaust gas. Since I've had the car the weather has been very cold, and against better judgement has been used mostly for short trips. My theory is that there is a build up of nasty stuff in the exhaust that isn't being burnt off due to the lack of a decent long run. Does this sound feasible? Also, I suspect that it could be caused by the mixture not being set correctly. However the car starts immediately, and runs very smoothly. The engine oil is lovely and clear. No nasty noises anywhere. I'd like to get to the bottom of this as soon as possible as passengers getting out of the car after a trip are getting poisoned, and the fumes get into the car as well.

it is more likely to incorrect fuel mixture............with a small pertcentage of it being the fact it needs a decent long run to warm through ..........................as for fumes getting into the car,a leaky exhaust could be responsible for that, especially if its only being used for short trips and the choke/cold start doesnt come off properly ;)

You sure it isn't just a build up of too many sprouts from yesterday that's my reason for noxious gases today lol

I suspect the gasses are getting into the car somehow. Check the boot seal and also the seals round the rear lights.

The standard exhausts do point down. It has been found that if you put an up swept style back box on these cars then more fumes can get into the car. its something to do with the air flow round the back of the car.

Also check the entire exhaust system for any leaks.

It sounds like the mixture is off.

This thread may help.

Though before a fiddle with some tools try some injector cleaner in the fuel (fill it with super) and thake it for a nice long blast.

Also check the plugs to see what state they are in and give them a clean or change them for some nice new Bosch ones (single electrode)

(wow, no sprout joke from me)

Could be a rear boot seal, or holes in the underside together with a slightly leaky exhaust.

OK guys, thanks for this. It seems that the general opinion is that the mixture is rich. I've already had the exhaust thoroughly checked over by the local exhaust centre and it was given the OK (also allowed me to thoroughly inspect teh underside - absolutely rust free and perfect). Currently I'm running the car on Tesco's straight unleaded. I have a long trip coming up in the near future, so before then I'll have the mixture checked by the local MB specialist (Derek Wells) and fill with super unleaded and give it a blast. Hopefully that should cure it. I'll check over the seals as well, as suggested. Really want to get it sorted asap as my wife and I are planning to drive to Paris in a couple of months to see friends.

Needs a good ole Italian tune-up!!!! ;)

Don't forget that most older, larger engined, non-cat cars always smell a bit 'fumey' anyway!!!
