will my 1990 1.8 manual 190e have a cat????#

if it is blocked, will it cause the car to not rev over 3000rpm and will it make the car drive gutless as hell.....

just wondering as i have noticed a smell when i get out of the car...

if i was to remove the cat and replace with a straight through pipe, will the engine run rough or have any other problems with the engine?????

please let me know if you have done this or you know the answer to my questions.

thanks

mark.

Not sure on the blocked/smell issue but the car will have no bother without it - it will have a little more power and not be an MOT issue.

My cat started to give off a funny smell when it was starting to 'block-up' and make the car feel similar to a slug. It was awful!

I decided to gut the cat (Mercedes wanted £400+vat for that bit!!) and replace it with a custom 2.25" straight pipe leading up to my Remus back box.

It was perfect! Made such a big difference!

BUT..... since then I have had slightly higher readings in emissions in my MOT. I had one place adjust the mixture to bring the levels down but then the car started to run a bit ropey. It still gives out a slightly higher reading than what it is supposed to be* - but i've been lucky there and been ok.. ;)

* = you might want to check with VOSA to see what the actual reading is meant to be for the W201 190. I recently looked in their books and the 190E is not listed. A friend told me that (supposedly) the law states that if the vehicle is not listed, then it is allowed to have a CO2 level of 3.5%.

I would DEFINITELY get this checked out before getting the straight pipe done.

I'm fairly sure the 3.5% value is correct, although at the last check mine was 0.37% B)

I had similar problem when I bought mine last year. So I used lot of injector/catalyst cleaner and almost half a can of wd40 on the fuel metering unit. Additionally with every chance I was driving the car on the motorway during night, without traffic.
Finally I had it working nicely one night on the M1 in a 200 miles round trip. :driver: :driver: :driver: :D :D :D :D :D :D

Try to drive with 3rd & 4th gears above 4000 RPM and try CATACLEAN from GSF. it is a bit expensive but works better than those cleaners of £4.00

i would love to try this but my car will not rev over 3000rpm whilst on tickover and not over 2500rpm whilst driving. lmao

Yes I know that feeling, the pedal is down to the metal -well... to the carpet- and the engine does not listen to your desire.

the best performance I saw on those horrible days was a maximum of 55mph on the 4th gear.
just add the fuel additive and drive it on 3rd then - motorway driving - and believe me it is going to clean its throat and will scream again. :S :S :S :S
Push it as hard as you can.
That's the way it worked on mine and it is a 1.8 manual as well.

^^ sounds like a cheaper option compared to getting a new straight pipe.

My advice would be to try the additive first and see how you get on with that. THEN, if it still doesn't work - then think about removing it.

P.S. You can get a "removable straight pipe" if you want to put your cat back on for the MOT. Just depends how much of a pain in the ass it is for you to remove it and replace it once a year.
