The exhaust on my 2.3-16 sounds, 'raspy' form under the car when revved. It passed the MOT and isn't blowing at all. It just has this metallic rasp that seems to come from the front or probably the downpipes, or even maybe the front box. It only makes the noise between certain low revs so its definitely resonance related. Is this normal behavior for the 16v models? It has an original Mercedes system on the car with the Merc star on the boxes. Any info would be good thanks. Stu |

The 16V's have a tubular exhaust manifold don't they? (As apposed to a cast item) In my years of classic mini modification, and various motorbike tuning I found that tubular manifolds always give a 'raspy' note. I don't know if this would be the case with the valver 190's. but I've always assumed that thicker cast manifolds absorb this sound before it gets to the down-pipe. If its not leaking and its running o.k then I wouldn't worry. Its likely meant to do it. All the best sports cars have a raspy tone. Al |

#1: Factory exhaust - rasps through 5000 rpm. #2: Powerflow (like Nick's) rasps through 4000 rpm #3: Perma-zaust stainless steel - sounds like a skeleton having a Jodrell on a tin roof.

I spoke too soon; the exhaust on the 2.5 just fell off! So there I sat in the central square in Taunton, pulled into the bus stop with the bonnet up and winkers going. Effing bus drivers! God! They are the rudest cunch of bunts possible. I returned fire with interest, as they say: "If w*****s like you spent more time doing your jobs instead of being lippy to broken-down drivers, then perhaps, for once, you could manage to stick to your sodding timetables..." Anyway the RAC bloke was splendid. There's nothing wrong with it, just rather badly suspended. So that is the next task on a seemingly endless list. He strapped it all back together and I drove home, also seething becaus I got a parking ticket, which I shall refuse to pay... |

Stu, my 16V (might be slighty different on 2.5's) did also 'rasp' from 2500rpm and I did'nt particulary like it but when we were replacing both the centre & rear boxes (with bloody expensive original parts) I in my wisdom I decided to delete the small expansion box at the down pipes. This came about because I had some correct diameter piping and the system was disconnected. Bad mistake, 'rasp' and imo is not a nice one now starts @ 2200rpm. Also I think I may also have created some extra back pressure just after of the down pipes. So warning to all don't delete the expansion box! |

Well, many thanks for the info, chaps I quite like the sporty rasp to be honest and now i know its normal i can enjoy that little bit more I'm glad it wasn't anything serious, Robert. I almost got wiped out by a bus running a red light the other week :C It was at 6.30am so he probably thought it would be OK to risk it the cnut. i see them doing it regularly at that time of the morning
