Cat converters are welded so an exhaust shop or a welder is required.
If you check www.magnaflowuk.com you will find some prices for replacement cats, or high flow ones.

I think of going that route for my 8valve

you don't have to weld it there. you can put it beyond the o2 sensor. or if you want it before the o2 sensor, you can extend the wires and mount it on the first part of where the exhaust goes horizontal. on 2.6's, the cat is past the o2 sensor

most decent muffler shops have cats of various diameters. you should just be able to have them weld one in. cost should be around 30 pounds plus another 20-30 for welding it in place

Are they not just bolted in place? Can you not just buy a cat replacement pipe that bolts in place of the cat?

I'm guessing MOT.
De-catting a 1992 car will get you a failed MOT, iirc?

His 8v is a 1993, so yeah he needs it for MOT.

Yes the Cats are welded in pace on the downpipes.

Any f'ing Cat will do; just make sure you can take the wretched thing off! So don't not have it welded on! Poisonous things. I did a comparison on the CO and UHC numbers between the Volvo (1997) and the new one 2.5-16 (non-cat) and the emissions from the Merc were lower by a large measure.

Remember, Chris, make sure the engine is as hot as possible before submitting to the emissions test. Leave it idling for half an hour, which should get the water up to 100 and the exhaust manifold red-hot. B)

Tbh I thought an original Cat section from MB would be about 3 times that amount.
Folk have been known to scrap cars based on the price of replacing them.

Cats is do nothing until the cars warmed up....

Still all my cat cars put out 0 CO and close to 0 HC (if they're working) If you remove a cat as it's still closed loop you should still be around 0.5% or less CO....
