the spoiler on my silver car is made of rubber, i think, even though it is painted, i noticed the cracked paint and had a feel and it is all squidgy.

but the one on my white one is plastic.

is this because the spoiler on the silver one is standard and the white one is made by Lorinser?

forgive my dumb questions but still trying to get to grips with mercedes....

They are made from a flexible foam material.

yep, its normal. They can have a funny habit, if the paint cracks and moisture gets in on particularly warm days it can swell and bulge, looks really odd.

Yep. mine is rubbery.
I had to tell the people at the hand car wash not to lean on it. If you flex it too much the paint will crack :(

some spoilers are made of rubber, some are made of abs plastic and some are even fiberglass. for example the kamei ones are fiberglass, the rieger are abs, and the oem are rubber

Rubber or dense foam?

I always thought they were made from high density foam or else the rubber would make them heavy and make your boot slightly harder to push up.

Yes, as Matt said earlier, they are dense foam material.

pretty sure they're injection molded rubber. every try injection molding expanding foam and then weighing it?

also, 16v had stiffer boot lid springs to accomodate for the added weight of the spoiler

I have two 190's on my drive side by side. One has an OEM spoiler (sig pic) and the other no spoiler at all. The spoiler on the black one feels rubbery. Now I can't confirm what it is made of but it has a flexible quality to it that I would not normally think of as foam.
The 'spoilered' boot is much heavier. .The springs can hold it up, but unlike the 'unspoilered' boot it will not pop up from around 4 inches opened. It must be opened to at least twice that before the spring can take the weight.. Having removed the spoiler to clean it, I can say it is one heavy lump for what it is. Also, de-spoilered the boot lid behaved in much the same way as the other 'unspoilered' boot.
So whatever its made of, it feels rubbery and is surprisingly heavy.

Well having repaired a few over the years, I can tell you that the factory ones are made from a dense foam.

the springs have a couple of positions they can be hooked into and you can have either one or two (one each side) so any weight can be accommodated.
