Window tints, laws on rear privacy glass

I'm only really here for the Kitchens

I am thinking of taking my veg car for a trip for the long weekend but dont really want to sleep in the back until I sort the privacy out.

I was going to use velcro curtains made from blackout cloth but I was thinking I might like to use thin perspex sheets, cut to the same size as the windows that I can attach to the inside of the glass giving me fully blacked out windows.

Firstly, what the law on privacy glass ? I am only talking about the rear window, the back door windows and the ones behind them (its an estate car. Windscreen and front side windows will be left as is.

I dont plan on driving like it but I assume that probably doesnt matter in the eyes of the law anyway.

As far as I know, only the front windows need to be within the law of either 25 or 30% I think it is.

The rest you can just literally paint them black if you like.

cool, I think fake tints will look far cooler than curtains, plus I dont want the plod moving me on so best to not look like a camper. I should get some 100% tints for the front and screen too, now that would be cool :) I wonder if they do distinguish between a car thats driving and a parked car.

:) :) No this is for removable panels that I put up when I am sleeping in it, its the 300td. I only really need the back because the rear seats fold forward and then a kind of blind thing raises up to the roof from just behind the front seats, separating the rear from the front by a barrier.

Ah I see.

Yeh the dog guard thing is pretty cool :)

Should make for some cossy sleeping, have you put a mattress in it? I swear I read somewhere that the estates are like designed to accommodate a mattress in the rear once the seats are folded down for two people to sleep.

Its basically the size of a double bed with a slight restriction at the hips where the wheels are. Very slight though. I have a 4 inch thick memory foam topper that I will most likely take on long trips. For short trips I have an inflatable camping mattress.

The dog net thing is cool but its the actuall load cover I plan to use, I should be able to rig that to go vertically and provide total privacy (the dog guard is a large mesh).

Get velour curtains, in pleat, with little tags to hold them to the outside when not closed.

Will it not be obvious there is a weirdo asleep in it ? I dont want to encourage bumlove from truckers. Or indeed getting moved on by police. I figured tints probably look less like it contains a person than curtains ?

Ill help you fit them in if you want. as for the law, i think you can completely black out the rear windows. Think of it as a van. the have metal panels. only the front screen and front side windows need to be clear. I have a electric rear blind in mine. £30 odd from Euro Car Parts. If you want black ply wood cut to size, let me know mate.

ah, plywood may be easy. I will have a think. I want it pretty thin, I am hoping it will all it in the small cubby hole that the 6/7 seat back fits into. Although I havent measured up yet.

Im working near your house this week, two roads away. i can pop over when i finish work on Friday, today. the lightest thing would be3mm - 4mm MDF. . light and flixible so you can wedge it in between the window rubber seals.

gimme a call or text, I may be off driving but if not it would be good to get your opinion. Today I have been thinking back towards the original setup I had planned which was to leave the windows clear but sleep UNDER the load cover blind with my head laying on the rear seat via half of the split rear seats being down. It may be a bit claustrophobic though. I would also have to build something to disguise my head !!!! Perhaps make it into a giant microphone or tumbleweed :P
