Hi, Some questions please- Anybody here running the ''spring blocks'' on their LSD, and if yes what is it like ? What other model rear diffs are compatiable with the 16v diffs, as I am looking for a 3.45 CW/P - Are any of these compatiable Rear diffs without the ASD function, ie Clutch plate type LSD ? Will the 16v Driveshafts bolt upto the compatiable diffs stub shafts, or do you have to run the 16v stub shafts so they fit the 16v half shafts ? I read somewhere that 2.3 and 2.5 16v half shafts are not the same, is this due to the 2.5's running ASD type rear diffs ? What other model halfshafts fit the 16v's ? Anybody know if the 93/99- 202- C Class rear subframe will fit a 190 ? I have a C36 AMG complete rear subframe with shafts, hubs, brakes, diff etc, which if it bolts up appears to sit the diff/shafts etc higher so if it fitted, then raising the rear suspesion C of G without altering the ramp angle would be much easier than moving up the mounts floor etc. if using the original 190 one ? Anybody know the diff ratio of a 190 2.6 Auto ? All help and information appreciated. Many thanks, The Gorilla. |

Only thing I can advise on for sure is the 2.6 diff. Man. trans. to 08/89 3.27 - 49:15, from 09/89 3.92 - 47:12 Auto trans all 3.07 - 46:15 |

The half shafts from a 2.6 will fit a Lsd, not ASD. You can use most C/W and Pinons that are made for the 201 and 124 series, there interchangeable. |

Later 2,3s also ran the ASD as opposed to the LSD setup. I don't know when the switchover took place, suggest 1986? I do not know, but people say that the LSD is superior in some respects... |

1.8 manual has a 3.64 I think. I still have my old diff and Im considering a swap in the future, but the 3.07 isnt that bad actually. Will wait until I have the new engine in to see how the revs and diff match up. |

Here is a link to a write - up we did a few years ago on some differential work we did that has info and hints that might help in your track diff project. I also have a spread sheet that I picked up somewhere that lists P/N's, ratios, body size, half shafts, etc for 201 & 124 diffs. It is quite helpful. Here is a link to the Diff spec/Part Number spread sheet mentioned above. I assume most are open diffs but I may be wrong as other than the German link posted above I do not know if either LSD or ASD were common as a diesel option. Hi, Matsalleh76- Thanks for the link on your Diff write up. Interesting stuff and lot of work and research in there. For Fast road and Track work, I think the ASD system is not really up to it, plus it just all adds weight and is something else to go wrong. A LSD with uprated or twin clutch packs, set to 45 up to 75% lock and 30/30 Ramp angles will improve the rear characteristics and keep the rear well in line. A Group N set up of 45% lock up is a very good compromise for a Road / Track car. There is a Drexler LSD on the CSL and it does make the car much more predictable near the limit than with the standard 25% LSD. Its set up with approx 75% lock, but in a progressive way. You need your backside to tell your brain that your nearing the limit, not just gone past it. Regards, The Gorilla. |

The purpose of the ASD is to, in Mercedes words, reduce the possibility of loss of vehicle control and/or the reduction of the effectiveness of ABS during braking, when one side of the car is on a slippery surface, which can occur with a conventional LSD. So something to do with LSDs making the car less stable under braking; hence the ASD. |

Some of the DTM cars actualy ran spools. We´ve made a spring pack solution a few yrs back that simply works great. No matter if the rear is a LSD or ASD as they basicaly work the same within. In case of ASD just scrap the lines and hydraulics. Lim slip is adjusted to approx 75-80%,and i´ve run this for yrs on the street with no ill effects. Have installed it on numerous cust cars that run the street with no ill effects. Only basic drawback is that the lim slip kind of cry out as you put the car in reverse and turn the steering wheel full lock,but that´s it. Difference in behaviour on the road is like night and day,and this mod really shines from that respect. The beuty of it is that this is something you can pull off yourself if you know your way around rear axles. Takes a couple of steel plates of approx 3mm thick highend steel. Drill a 29mm dia hole exactly in the middle of each plate. Toss the OEM e-clips that hold the yokes in place for the halfshafts as these aint needed. Get a pair of OEM 2.3-16 valvesprings. Compress these and lock with safetywire for install. Install one plate inside the differential carrier on each side of the spider gears. Install one spring per each open side of the differential. Now for the "unholy" part,and that´s where you weld a 6mm solid rod from each resp plate to the diff carrier with the TIG welder. Use appropriate weldrod for this. Done. When measured with a torq wrench at the yokes you should get a reading of approx 200-250Nm before break away. No need to replace disc clutch pack as the static load of the springs will make the sintered plates work no matter if they´re worn,and the linearity of the springs will compensate for wear. Ie;clean what´s in there out and reinstall....done deal. |

What we do with our race cars in Thailand now is using Nissan Skyline's Diff with LSD (Nismo, Cusco, aftermarket) with custom shaft to use with W201 driveshafts. What we do because we can find easier final ratio compared to Merc OEM diffs and get the thing A LOT CHEAPER. Also, To suit the track, I have to use more than what Merc offer, 4.4:1 or 4.1:1 Edited by Ake RT, Wed Oct 28, 2009 11:30 am.

ake, im planing to do the same thing r33gtst rear diff housing and axles 5 bolt with the 4.1 final drive, being that kaaz is a shop sponsor im opting for their 1.5 way diff. should be very well suited for the mercs size and amount of power im shooting for. just worried about blowing up output shafts which have been a problem in the past. we will see merc from what i have found out just on here is much too electrical and not enough mechanical. like i stated in a suspension post somewhere on here be ready for some s13 coilovers to be mounted to a w201 in the near future providing a cheep alternative the the outlandish options i have come across so far... I think if you do well balancing of the output shafts I do not think there will be any problem. Choose the right material and right machine to do. In thailand there are many 190Es transplanted 1JZ/ 2JZ GTE with 400+ hp, they are using pretty much the same as me, skyline diff and mod output shafts to suit the Merc hub and they have been surviving until know without problem. Hi Dan, There is no kit in here, they did by themselves. But if you want, I can check and provid a kit for you. What I did was redrill the LSD mounting at the subframe. It might not look great but functional. Best regards, Ake |
