the black 2.0 auto has a serious drink problem........ ^o)

a tenner only seams to last about 15 miles....

I think you can amputate the Cat, but you have to stick it back on for the MOT...

i have a very friendly MOT tester..... garage i used to work at dont mind testing cars without cats..............

right then...... think i will pull out the welder and weld a bit of straight through pipe where the cat sits tomorrow.

will i be ok removing the o2 sensor, or will i still have to use it?

Sounds like the 'Lamda Sensor' if thats gone it will be running in 'Emergency Mode' which will give a high consumption, I wouldn't cut out other reasons eg. as I got a hell of a consumption untill I changed my 'Hydro Cam Followers' but you would be able to hear those, and have a look at your plugs, clean ? colour, gaps etc.
Cheers Barrie.

Ps. If it has a Cat. you can cut it out and replace it with a bit of (I think it's 2in. diameter) pipe but it will definately need the 'Lamda Sensor' as it is that that tells the ECU what mixture to supply, as I said before without it the ECU will switch into Emergency Mode, and that makes your engine very thirsty.

Sounds like the lamda could be causing the issue then...I've no idea of the values, but you should be able to measure the voltages going through it and compare it to a know working car....

Just so you know, a new Bosch Lambda Sensor for an 8-valve M102 engine is about £67 +VAT from Euro Car Parts.
Thread on the subject here.

I have searched the threads but am still stumped- I have a 2.0 auto with the M102.962 ( no cat, no lambda) and have recently had the idle mixture set (was very lean) but still have stupidly high consumption. New injectors a few weeks (and tanks of fuel) ago, too. Head gasket done a few months ago. I get around 250 miles from an almost full tank ( say 50 litres?) and that has been steady city-to-city stuff on occasion. Time to get into the injection system and test and clean stuff- but where shall I start? I am new to injection systems so would very much appreciate some steerage rather than just throwing money at the problem, replacing one bit at a time.

I thought I had a high consumption but on a steady trip it doesn't look too bad for a 2 litre. Still needs a go through to make sure things are tip top and the first place I would probably start with is the air flow meter and throttle body. It sits under the air cleaner.

When you remove the air cleaner you will see the top of the throttle body assembly and the plate for the air flow meter. The plate shouldn't be sticky and move down freely inside the body. Also check the condition of the gaskets between the throttle body and the air flow meter.

Also check the injectors don't leak! I have cleaned them with carb cleaner after it started to idle lumpy but it's need of some new ones.
