Tomorrow I'm going to remove the tyres so that I can clean them again properly! My axle stands are under a citroen 2CV (Dolly) right now, so I can't use them!

What can I use instead of axle stands? Some big stones are any good? Or its not good for the body??

Any hints please?? Cause I really dont want to have the jack stressed with the car on the jack while cleaning the tyre!

whatever you use put a rag between it and the car, dont scrap anything off the car itself.. Even axle stands but particularly with other stuff. I have seen people use spare wheels. When I use to use a jack to go under the car (dont do it kids, seriously) I used to shove a wheel under there just in case.

mark had his up on big bricks (one per corner not a ropey pile of them) today and after leaning on it for 10 minutes before noticing I decided it was pretty stable.

i always stick the wheel under the car as well as an axle stand just in case but i dont see the prob if you take each wheel off and clean it and put it back on it wouldnt be a prob with just the jack unless you take a week on each wheel lol

i think you will find that the car was on axel stands in all 4 corners mate....

the blocks are there only for added security, just incase it comes off the stands.

there is no way i would work under a car unless it was properly secured with proper axel stands.

seen what happens when an accident occurs.

My expensive 2 ton hydraulic jack exploded a few weeks ago, and all I was doing was pressing the raised bit down with my foot to lower it to get it under the car. No weight at all and it exploded, covered me in fluid and dropped to the ground. Still got a rash from the fluid !

I will never get under a car thats purely on a jack ever again. Took me til I was 35 but I have no officially learned. I had a mini fall on me ages ago on a scissor jack, it tipped over. My brilliant brain made me throw my mobile at the house window to get my parents to notice. It didnt cross my mind to ring one of them using the very same phone !!! Still, did the job.

[edit]
sorry mark, I sit corrected.

I'm using the factory jack. Will it resist a 10mins cleaning every tyre? If yes no worries! hah!

But as I said, the factory jack is good enough to resist the weight for a period of time?

no worries mark, no offence taken, I was probably high on veg oil at the time :P
I thought it seemed a tad too stable.

I wouldnt even change a wheel under the stock jack alone anymore. 3 years ago I changed my front flexdisc using nothing but one stock jack. Now, no fcking way. Perhaps its more reflection of my change but if you have a spare in the boot, get it under the car just in case and never put your legs under the car unless you absolutely have to. Its a really bad habit I have.

My axle stands were £7 a pair from lidl.

make sure that the hand break is on fully and in park if an auto.

if it is manual, put it in gear.

and make sure you chock the opposite wheel that you are jacking up.

i.e. drivers front wheel in the air, chock the passenger rear.

totaly aggree kenny. a gpair of axel stands with a rating of 2 ton or more is a MUST for anyone working on a car.

even if you are just changing a tyre.

but if you dont have a pair yet. please please make sure you have the wheels chocked... the OE jack is only a single lenght piice of kit with no supports and sits on a curved base.... very easy to slip, especialy if on uneven ground.

I have a set of 4 axle stands, but as said before, they are under a citroean 2CV right now, so...

The stock jack is removed from the list. I'm going to use my cousin's 10 ton bottle jack.

Can you please explain me the term 'chock'? What do you mean by having the wheels chocked?!

to chock a wheel - means to put a brick or something as sutable infront of and behind the tyre to stop forward and rearward movement whilst the car is being jacked up.

the tearm "chock" is normaly used on aircraft whilst grounded to stop them moving. it is usualy a triangular plastic or metal device that is placed either side of the wheels. but the same applys to a car...

hope that helps.

Ok I got it mate! Thanks a lot!!

I have a piece of wood, fabricated for the use to stop the wheel to go forward or rearward! When I jack to remove one of the front tyres, I used it on one of the rear tyre. Is that wrong??

Thanks for all the help.

that is fine mate.... best way is to put it at the opposing wheel directly diagonally to the one that is being jacked up.

well.. that is what i was always taught.

I'll give it a go tomorrow! Still I'm to rest the car on some bricks with rags between the car and bricks, as kentronix stated!

Anyways, if you see a post from me tomorrow evening fine, if not, probably I'll be stuck under the car

or to make an actual phone call, all in jest but marks right, if my mini accident had happened when my folks were out I would possibly have ended up loosing a leg, of at least a foot. And the mini is a lot lighter than a merc.

I was pulling the driveshafts out (front wheel drive), I was about 18. Obviously an original mini not the bmw abomination.

It tipped off the jack sideways, which was still just about holding it at an angle. One leg was helping hold the weight but the other was held under the front disc. (mini GT's have discs :P ).

I could hold it but I didnt have the strength to put it back up on the jack so once I gave way it would have probably cut into my leg. Very worrying at the time I can assure you but I was still back to working under a jack within a few days. Like an idiot.

Ok ok fine. I'm just removing a wheel, clean it and back on! I'm not gonna live under a jacked car! hah!!
