About the chocks................always use two , one each end of the tyre. Just like they do on aircraft.

Edit: I have just ordered a pair of these

The best thing to use instead of axle stands is...more axle stands. At 20 a pair its mad not to have a spare pair. I have 16 axle stands as you never know just how much stuff will be jacked up. Also they are handy when building a trailer.

I also speak from experience, i have got an 'airbag' jack which is wafer thin but inflates off the cars exhaust, so if for a mad reason i have to work under a car unsupported i can get it lifted quickly, with a wheel underneath obviously.

I was under mine today with it up on 4 axle stands, quite scary really considering i dont have much assurance of the jacking points structural integrity other than that it hasnt failed an MOT. I do most of my work on the street and im right next to a uni halls, so theres always loads of people walking past just in case, although if a stand did fail with me underneath it i dont think there would be much anyone could do anyway.

yeah its one of those things ive always wondered what can be done if the axle stand fails and your half under the car is it better to jack car up quick as possible or take it easy when removing all that presure could it do more harm with the sudden blood flow again

this is kinda on the same wave length whats peoples views on the difference between trolley jacks and bottle jacks ive always used trolleys but wonder what people thought about bottles???

the problem is :

as you jack up a car it travels in an arc, not straight up so the trolley jack can move with the car bottle jacks cant so the car is more likely to slide off.

bottle jacks are ok for lifting a bottom arm into a hub, or raising a diff up into the subframe (straight lifts) but I wouldnt personally use one to lift a car.

After all the orig jack is built and designed for the job, and I don't think a firm like MB would risk loads of claims and finger pointing, and I would also say a trolley jack is more sensible than a bottle jack, I agree fully with Richy190E.

Unless you have 4 jacks and 4 people to jack then bottle jacks arent recommended to lift a car, even in an emergency and firms like LIDL and Netto arent doing people any favours by selling them for under a tenner, people who dont work with cars regularly are going to think that they are suitable.

In fact I did use the trolley jack. My cousin did not let me use the bottle jack, as its not safe as the trolley, so went for the trolley.

I did a brick and a small piece of wood (between the brick and the car) and used it instead of the axle stand. And I did clean them fine!!

whatever you use put a rag between it and the car, dont scrap anything off the car itself.. Even axle stands but particularly with other stuff. I have seen people use spare wheels. When I use to use a jack to go under the car (dont do it kids, seriously) I used to shove a wheel under there just in case.

mark had his up on big bricks (one per corner not a ropey pile of them) today and after leaning on it for 10 minutes before noticing I decided it was pretty stable.
Mark also used axle stands lol. i had a look Kenny lol.

I'd suggest solid timber or a spare tyre. you dont have to jack it up too high.

I did my mates alloys last week, inside out. need to do mine sonetime this week.

I've also made a trolley which the 190 sits on when its got no wheels, sits under the 4 bungs in the floor. Means i can roll it round the workshop if need be.

anyone used one of these http://www.strongmantools.co.uk/SL2800.php £1500 is a lot but it would save you loads in garage bills over time, on a difficult job it might end up costing you that much in labour alone, plus you can loan it out to your mates

They arent much cop, you can only work around the car. Oil changes, brakes etc. Anything uselul like a gearbox, exhaust or clutch is like an obsticle course. You can get a proper ramp for less than that.

Just my opinion.

i think if i had that sort of money to spend on tools i would rather get a bigger trolley jack that'll lift the car higher and some bigger axle stands and still have a decent wedge to use on fixing the car but if money no object i think a proper 2 poster would be better job and you could get one off ebay for that sort of money
