what are the main variables in getting a nice clean and consistent idle?

my idle in my 2.5-16v is a little wobbly. it does not make it stall or is high or is dramatic enough to signal a serious problem. I understand the older the engine gets the more unstable the idle gets but why and what can be done to smooth it out a little???

Could be many things you'll need to be more specific there areloads of threads on this. eg My problem was cold start valve which caused variable idle but only when cold

could be a 3 thing change, cold start valve, idle valve, throttle sensor switch.....

there is not much to be specific about. it is not erratic and is not different at cold or hot.

i think one of those three things has already been replaced - idle air valve i think (on the RHS of the engine midway along on the top side looking from the front?)

where are the other things and how do they cause problems?

Start with the basics, plugs, leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm and then get it tuned, then see what the idle is like.

Checking the throttle plate for accurate clearance can help a lot. It's pinned up in the engine section.

Unstable idle can be the engine mounts as well, if these are gone it could cause the car to run with a shake.
grab the engine and rock it when cold, if there is a lot of movement and noise, possible there gone...

slight idle misfires were a bugbear of mine. Car ran fine otherwise but I'm fussy. in the dark always noticed arcing to the cylinder head no matter what plugs and leads I used...I just lived with it! Finally fixed with some merc leads....for now!

Mine ran a little shakily for about 3 weeks after I brought it back into use. Previously it was sat unused for 6 months.

Maybe some injector cleaner and a couple of tanks of Optimax?

right i have changed the plugs, dizzy cap, rotor arm and leads and still getting an uneven idle which sometimes stalls espeacilly when the revs divebomb like when putting the clutch down quickly

have checked out this throttle plate clearance and it sounds pretty tricky.....is there any easy way i can find out if this is a problem??

still need to check the throttle switch....is this the micro switch which the throttle cable touches at idle?? it deffinitely clicks shut when throttle released
