Has anyone replaced their oil pump on a 16 valve ?
No point in using a secondhand pump so its down to whatever price the dealer wants. I hope someone will tell me that its a case of just removing the sump undoing a few bolts and bobs your uncle.
Can it be that easy ?

The oil pump is driven by the timing chain and is fairly straight foward in itself once the access is gained and the timing cover removed. What engine do you have, and what are your symptoms?

Hi,

Desmoboy- your thinking of a BMW.

No, Merc made if far more complex.

If I was going to change the oil pump
on a 16v, after now seeing whats
involved, I would check other items
and components along the way also.

Chain, Guides, chain sprockets, water
pump, chain tensioner, you get the picture.

The Gorilla.

Hi Richy
Engine is a 2.5 16v, nothing wrong really just a little less than 3 bar when at idle. More a case of, if its not too much grief then change the pump to be certain of a long engine life. Currently on 142000 miles.
I was wondering if there is a high capacity pump available as well.
If the price for one is too high then this will remain on the wish list rather than the to do list.

Deffinately not thinking of a BMW, never had one, never will and certainly not looked inside the engine of one.
Why would i need to look at those other parts. The chain and tensioner was replaced by the previous owner a few years ago so i wont be going there.

Oil pressure "a little less than 3bar at idle" is fine. I would not worry about it until something else needs meddling up front like replacing chain guides. Replacing the pump is a fairly major job.

Hi,

Desmoboy- it seems that my remark regarding the
BMW has been lost.

BMW- drop the sump pan, split the chain,
change the oil pump, job done.

Mercedes, well.

As regard the other parts, I said to 'check'
along the way, as to do all that work involved
for the access, just for the oil pump alone.

As regards under 3 bar indicated on the
Guage on tickover, the fact that its not
actually even making 1.5 bar in reality
suggests its fine.

Regards,

The Gorilla.
