Where can I get my engine tuned?

I have a 2.6 auto (111,000) which runs pretty nice, but I have an inkling that I'm not getting all the horses out of it that I should. I've had my local garage service it, but they're not specialists, and to be honest I thought the brakes were better before the last service!

Are there any Merc tuning specialists who can give my car at least as much zip as it's supposed to have? Although I'm in the far north, I'm heading abroad later in the year and can leave it at any given location for a month or so.

The main thing is to return it all to factory settings , all the usual service items should be changed for OEM , then there are various items that wear , your compression should be checked , and a very good and often forgotten change are the injectors .

John Lamb is an absolute wizard. Tunes racing Porsches & loves older Mercs. Rolling road, latest Dynotune equipment. The only mechanic I've ever seen who goes to work every day in a clean pair of WHITE overalls. You could eat you dinner off his garage floor and he's always busy. In fairness, Jeremy's advice is probably the same as John would give. He would make your 2.6 run as per its original performance, but would only use factory parts. He has performed wonders on cars for me in the past without doing anything outrageously expensive, just making them go as they were originally meant to. Listen to John and he will set you right, he's the straightest guy I know. Make out like you know more than him (which you couldn't even begin to) and he'll politely show you the door. Will only cost you a phone call and you'll soon find out. Very highly recommended.

Or Dave Walton Specialist Car Services: Crook, County Durham 01388 763136. Maintains a racing Ferrari, works on Ferraris, Lambos, Mercs & Beamers. great guy & knows his stuff. Loves older Mercs too.

good luck

Thanks for the advice and contacts.

I was out in the car today, on the longest run since I've had it, on the empty (but narrow) roads of Sutherland. In fact the roads are so empty that the biggest hazard are cars coming at you on the wrong side of the road, driven by Europeans who've forgotten which country they're in. The sportline handling is fine, The brakes need to be sorted again (I'm really **insert swear word here**ed off that they were better before my local garage charged £120 to fix/replace them). The engine is very nice at high revs, but seems reluctant to respond without a serious kickdown.

I'm planning to head to Malta (land of my birth, although of British stock) in December/January, so I hope to drop the car somewhere then head to a nearby railway station/airport for a month or more, while I get some meditteranean warmth instead of the dark damp winters we get here in the far north.

(Sorry for delay in responding, I'm having a problem with the site, and have to request a password reset every time I want to log in.)

Didn't realise you were THAT far north! M-B Club 190 guru is Stephano Mazzoni at Merparts in Port Glasgow. 01475 741236 Drop your car in there, bus/train to Glasgow airport. Silver bird, sun, sand and sangria. Hey presto. Job done!

Hi

I know this feeling. When I first had my 2.6 it went like a storm - but only when the kickdown was savaged by my right foot.

It wasn't until Andy (ukmerctechie) adjusted the kickdown cable (think its called a Bowden cable) properly that the drive of the car was transformed. I had previously tried to do it myself after reading an advice thread on the site and my efforts had made no apparent difference whatsoever. So I returned it to its previous setting before taking it to him.

Before the adjustment, the car didnt want to drop down to second without full kickdown even in 'S' mode. I was convinced the car was stuck in 'E'.

Now, I can drop into second and keep it there, without hammering the kickdown.

It really is like driving a different car.

Using the box as a semi-auto makes a massive difference. Cruising at 50 and want some grunt? Just pull the selector back to '3' and plant your right foot. Drop into '2' at 30mph and put some distance between you and the car behind!

The little 'dot' markings on the speedo under the relevent mph indicate the maximum speed for your car in that gear. Dont forget that you have to change up as the box won't!

Again its like driving a different car.

As for the brakes what have your garage done - used cheap parts? I insist on MB parts and I think that Green is a popular brand on the site for pads.

I recently had the rear discs and pads changed. The discs were in a dire state particuarly on the inside. My braking experience has been transformed!

That man Stu is obviously getting far too much enjoyment from his 2.6 - if that's possible!

Talks a lot of sense, mind you :D A properly set up 2.6 auto is a joy to drive....although possibly I'm just a little bit biased.......
