I am replacing the dizzy cap, rotor arm and coil on my 2.5-16v as i dont know when they were last changed and it seems a good idea.

Thought i would be quite easy to swap them over but looking at haynes before i take it it looks quite involved to make sure everything is lined up when you take the old one off.

could someone do a quick decription of what i need to do for a 2.5-16v....?

they're keyed, you can't fit them the wrong way....

cool. so there is no lining up of the crank to do or anything else that will screw up the timing? all the timing is done by the EZL knob on these cars isnt it?

You're not removing the distributor, only the plastic cap and the rotor arm that sit inside. Just make sure that you fit the four ignition leads into the same place that they came from (do as chris said and mark them accordingly).

Remove the cap and rotor to check the condition - you can check for cracks, wear etc. Are you having ignition problems at the moment?

Very simple job - 5 minutes max. But a word of warning - the securing screws (2x cross head) that hold the cap in place are known to sometimes shear off upon removal. Then you'd be left with a problem to sort out!

Not the end of the world, just means that if this happens you'd need to remove the distributor itself to drill the old screws out carefully, possibly re-tapping the thread if it's damaged.

Take care and I'm sure you'll be fine :)

What's wrong with it?

No offence intended, but you don't make a good car replacing parts that are perfectly OK.

Probably more likely to introduce faults that way. If your ignition system is fine, don't worry about it.

it says it is a service item in haynes and i cant see when one has been done in the past paperwork so wanted to get it done. my idle is ever so slightly erratic so if that happens to improve a little bit i will be happy.

The coil is not a service item, it either works or it doesn't. Haynes do not even produce a manual for the 2.5-16.

I don't think changing a working coil for another working coil is going to improve a less than perfect idle.

Sorry if this sounds blunt but I'm just being honest and trying to help you. It's probably worth you finding a decent specialist who knows how to properly diagnose the KE-jet system and can advise you on the mechanical condition of your engine.
