Hey guys, i returned to my car after a meeting to find a small puddle under my 1992 2.0. (i was away for about an hour and a half) I opened the bonnet and noticed that there was some water dripping out of a long, thin(ish) pipe that seemed like it may be connected with the Water Pump? It's tricky for me to see where actually this pipe leads to but it appears to be going in the direction of the water pump. Anyone know why this may be leaking? What is this pipe for? If no one knows the pipe im talking about, i can take pics. The pipe appears to be coming out of the bottom of the water pump area and runs alongside the bottom of the engine block (next to the big oil sump - i think that's what it's called!?) I topped up my coolant level and drove home and the car doesn't appear to have leaked any more since being parked up. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys! ![]() |

Just done a search and it seems someone else had a similar problem, this appears to be the pipe (taken from Rick1's post in another thread):![]() So it's actually a coolant escape pipe eh? Does this definitely mean new water pump?? How come the water leaked earlier but not now? Thanks guys! ![]() |

That pipe is between the two seals on the water pump, when the inner seals fail water leaks out the pipe telling you it's water pump change time... Don't use gsf ones, mine has lasted about 30k miles and the bearings are now shot... No idea how much a genuine one is though. |

Thanks Hugh! Looks like there's no getting around this one then - i need a new water pump! ![]() Not the end of the world, but I need my car all weekend long and i'm guessing that driving around with a shot water pump isn't going to do the engine any good - right? Or is it still ok to drive? Also, the water pump from GSF and Euro Car Parts are the same price (Just under £40) - i believe someone bought one from the dealer and it cost them well over £100! How difficult is it to fit one of these? Removing a radiator is about as technical as i've ever got... and I was guided by Steve on the phone! |

I think it's a fair job V, the rad and fan need to come off as i recall and a few other bits. I paid £100 for parts a couple of years ago, and about £100 fitting i think, it was a long time ago though. You should be fine with it over the weekend, they tend to die a reasonably slow death i think. Mine leaked the same to start with too.

^^ 'fraid so dude. It's a big bitter-sweet thing. I know i am going to miss it terribly but it's the right thing to do for me now. Just got a quote from a local mechanic who has done work on my car before - he's charging £70 labour to remove current one and fit the new one. |

I've been told by one of the mechanics that the car is still ok to be driven, though i must keep an eye on the coolant level. Can anyone confirm this? Although the water pump needs replacing, is it actually still working and transporting coolant around the system? Thanks! |

I drove with a leaking water pump for a while in the scirocco, no idea if its the same on the 190 but personally I would shove a few 2 litres bottles of water in the boot, and keep an eye on the level and engine temp. Allow half hour extra for jouneys. If the level drops and it can no longer keep the temp below 100 you should pull in, and chill for half hour while it cools down enough to top the coolant up. btw, I dont know if you remember but when we changed your thermostat we did notice the pump was making a bit of noise (first sign of failure). Hope you put a pound a week into your water pump fund

^^ oh yeah, i completely forgot about the good old 'water pump whistle'. After i realised that the pump was on its way out yesterday, the noise came back for about 5 seconds and then buggered off again! ![]() I thought you said the whole forum was going to contribute to my water pump? ![]() |

Just reading through this as I have just had the coolant light come on after doing a flush this weekend... Could it not be the head gasket if the Coolant has been turned dark in the expansion tank and this pipe is dripping water out of it? Or is it definatly the sign of a new water pump requirement? Or both? www.Worried.co.uk |

if theres water coming from that pipe, then you probably need a new pump. however the car could of over heated due to the water pump not working and blown the head gasket.

My 1st 190 had similar problem, Different Symptoms. Ive established Gasket on my H-Reg, went and bought a 72,000minter and now this. I'm praying that it is th water pump as my H-reg wasnt leaking at all, just losing coolant and a steamy exhaust which isnt happening on my new one. I ask for your prayers on this matter. Come'on WATER PUMP! |

Plan is to send my bebe of to a specialist and get an overhaul. Hows yer luck though, 2 white 1.8s within a year, 2 coolant problems. Both possible head gaskets. And I still love both cars dearly. Mechanic Evening Course me'thinks! |
