oil pressure - intermittent fault ?

Here's a strange one ....

Normally I have full oil pressure from startup.
When warm, it stays at 3, and will drop to just over 2 at idle.

Sometimes, maybe 1 day in 5, I get it reading about 1.5 to 2.

If I stop, turn off engine, and startup again, it will usually* go straight back up to 3.
I know nothing about the oil pumps in these, so is there a filter/gauze of some sort on the pump that could be getting clogged, and when I stop the engine it unclogs itself ?

*usually = 9 times out of 10. This morning it stayed at just under 2, but this evening when i started up again it was back to normal.

Oil level is spot on, just under max.
Oil is clean. Water is clean. No oil/water mix

Any ideas ? Could it be electrical ?

cheers.

I don't know Declan. Poss intermittant fault with oil pressure switch. I've never heard of oil pump failure. Worth carrying out a engine flush and refill with fresh & fit new filter - it's cheap to do but don't use a harsh flush as it will fook seals etc.

i got this prob as well .just on odd occasions it'll drop to 2 bar and stay there stop and restart goes back to 3 , replaced pressure switch and valve control in block under switch . no joy i live with it (3 yrs now) when i attended mboc at jamaica inn a couple blokes who know the model says its the gauge i have asked about this prob before and no one knows

it cant be the oil pump because it's intermttent and its not my oil switch and valves there new so it only leaves the oil preesure switch in the timing case and if it sticks sometimes wtf i burn no oil and have run like this for a long time

solution if u are really worried is a oil pressure sitch that is not electrical

there is a post on it someone may know where it is

i'd be interested in knowing if u cure the prob

one guy one the forum done the ops and that cured his, but i think hes was low all the time

best to u SJ

It could be the sender which measures the oil pressure

Sounds like a 'Duff' connection to me which is causing a resistance in the line to the gauge.

hmmm. thanks for the feedback.

Any ideas as to how I go about checking for electrical problems ?
presumeing the sender is resistive, does it increase or decrease with oil pressure ? i.e. if I short out the sender, will I get full oil pressure on the gauge, or vice versa ?

Ahh, its no big deal. It did worry me at first, but it seems to be a faulty reading, so no big deal. I just like to have everything "right", if that makes sense.

Cheers.
