OK, so I've tried searching and searching again, but I can't find anywhere that answers the question.

How much ATF is needed to fill up the transmission to the required level?

From the Haynes manual, all models except 2.3 and 2.6 - 6.6 litres (approx)
2.3 and 2.6 models - 7.1 litres (approx).

You'll need to allow for the torque converter/oil cooler pipes. A 190E 2.0 on initial fill (new g/box) 6.6lt and oil changes will require 5.5lt.

That's a surprising amount of oil actually, I'm too used to my Honda using 2.1litres.

I can go ahead and order some now then, going to be giving it a full service before getting it back on the road. At 73,525 miles, doubt it's ever been changed.

Thank you, gentlemen.

Yeah but stronger box than the Honda but no doubt an older design too.

To be fair to the Honda gearbox, they're easily capable of handling force inducted 400bhp without modification and without problems. It's the driveshafts that needs strengthening. But probably still not as strong as the Mercedes unit.

You may get away with buying just a 5.5/6 litre according to Haynes. Best way is to check level is OK before draining then measure how much you take out both gearbox+ torque converter and replace with the same amount as a refill starting point.

Hi, I am about to do my ATF fluid on my 2.6 auto. I was wondering how much more effective / better results it has todrain the box entirely including the toque converter? Does it justify the extra mount of fluid required?

Also if I was to drain the box entirely how much should I put in before fireing it up and running it through the gears before adding more?

If I was to only drain what comes out of the sump plug how much should I put in before starting?

I also have a new filter and gasket to pu in so doing a half ass job and only replacing half the fluid will not make it very worth while? yes? no?

Cheers

drain the box and the TC, whats the point in leaving a couple of litres of manky fluid in?

put 3 litres in before starting otherwise it may overflow, allow to idle for a few seconds before moving the selector.

2 full 5 litre containers will be cheaper than buying 1 5lt and 2x 1lt, you will use anywhere between 5-7lt. and next time you will only need to buy one 5 litre.
