ok so i have had a bit of problems with starting but she would go after a bit if chugging i had to leave her standing for 2 weeks now and thought that should be ok

well now she will turn over but not start so im thinking fueling problems as when i start her up i dont get the psst sound from the rear that i take is the fuel pump priming

she is an 86 2ltr petrol

she has plenty of petrol and the batt is well charged dizy and leads all attached tightly

so any ideas as to how i sort this out would be great as i really need to get the car running again as i cant keep borrowing the missus car for work so cheers for any help

Sounds like the fuel pump relay.

If your sure you dont get the fuel pump priming noise its almost certainly the pump or the relay and the relay is most likely. Remember once the system is primed the pump wont need to prime again so you only hear it first couple of times you attempt to start it.

You can take the relay out and give it a few taps. It often kicks it back in. Its possible its a dirty connection on one of the relays prongs.

The relay is the oblong black box next to the ECU behind the battery. If you havent removed one before and your having trouble it may be worth whipping the battery out for access. Once you get used to it you wont need to, its just a bit awkward.

There is no priming at all as in left for several hours and no sound

the relay is that the silver box with the red fuse on top??? Any idea how much a new one is gona sting are we talkin 2, 3 or 4 figures and what about the pump is it hard to replace and is it costly and are they merc only bits and finally is it fine to get a 2nd hand stuff or better for new???

Have you thought about the fuel pump itself ?

Mine just died one day, had to get a new one.

Hi mate

if you are turning on the ignition and dont get that primeing sound for 10 seconds then you need to remove that big relay again
and bypass it with a wire into holes 87 and 30
with the ignition on and you inseting the wire you should hear it prime up
jump in and turn it over should start and be usable (if this fixes it)
but you will need to get a relay and once you turn off the engine you will nedd to remove the wire or the pump will keep running (or add a switch into the loop for a temp fix)

all the best

what ever you do if you buy a replacement make sure its identical, there are lots of types and a similar number doesnt mean it will work. Manual/auto makes a difference as does if it has aircon. There is also another factor which I havent worked out yet so best go by part number really.

Easy option is bridge the pins as steve says.
