Car wont start?

Hi
went away for a long week-end,car drove fine, got home to Surrey from the West Midlands,
parked the car on the grass verge because my other car was on it.
Went to start the car but would not turn over,AA guy came and tried and said that the fuel monitoring system could be the problem. When i told Stempies about this he said it sounds like the OVP relay,
what do you guys think? Also the garage have had the car all day and could not start it ,but said that some else who works alot with Mercedes will look at it in the morning.
What does the relay do ?
Thanks
Lee

Now know what the OVP relays ,but still none the wiser:-)
Really odd that the car was running fine, with no hint of any problems, then just wont start:-(

You say it wouldn't turn over? As in the starter motor wasn't even cranking? If that's the case, nothing to do with the OVP relay.

I'd check the battery and connections to the starter first.

I'm only really here for the Kitchens

There is a 'car wont start' troubleshooter here:-
http://s14.zetaboards.com/mercedes_190_club/forum/5967/

Its not exactly in depth as I never got around to finishing it but will get you to eliminate a few options. If you end up on the "ht leads and dizzy cap" then it could also be lots I just havent gone very far on that outcome.

we did check all this when the AA guy came, engine would start when after he took the air filter off and pressed down on something which i forget the name of sorry
when it came up the engine would cut out ,or continue if i kept the revs up

What he pressed down on would be the Air Flow Meter plate. IIRC pressing down on that causes the fuel system to fire up. IE the fuel pump starts and the injectors start pumping fuel. It does indeed sound like the fueling part of the set up isnt working as it should. Did the AA chap not check the OVP fuse? It certainly does sound like an OVP issue. The relay itself could have a drt solder or two.(check kenny's 'resoldering dry joints' post. It does seem to be a growing problem on our cars now that they are getting older. It also seems to be a growing problem on Porsche from the same era.

Worst case scenario is that the Fuel injection ECU has packed up. It could also be the fuel pump or fuel relay but i dont think it would even start if they were at fault??

I wish you the best of luck and please keep us informed.

But surely if that's the problem, it would at least crank over when you turn the key.

That depends on whether you are normally a 'Hands on' man yourself or rely on garages all the time.

No good at that sort of stuff lol, let hope it runs better wheni get it back, but to be honest the car sounded fine all the time i drove it .
Thing that does pee me off is that it gave no sign that anything was wrong
just parked it up,went to start it up after a short while but no joy
Is this the norm for this sort of thing?

if it is the fuel distributor they could try hitting it on between where the fuel lines come out of it with a hammer !
i have read that this can free them up if the plungers sticking

not very technical but its cheaper than 700 if it works

You should be able to get one second hand for a fraction of the price mate.

I can give you the details of two scrappys not all that far from us.

This is the one I'd recommend you try first they're a couple of friendly old chaps with a Mercedes spares shop in Thornton Heath. Been there loads of times and they always have a 190 in the yard.

LHD International Vehicles
141 Windmill Rd
Croydon, CR0 2XT
020 86893247‎

Damn can't find the full details of the other it's on Kings Avenue in Clapham.
Bear with me...they come a lot less recommended anyway. Not as helpful and more expensive but they're local and will probably have what you're looking for too.

Hi,

I feel sorry for you, it sounds like a case of they are taking advantage of you'

If as you say it wouldn't even turn over then it is unlikely to be the 'fuel monitering system'

They are using your ignorance to make money. :crying:

It is more likely to be an 'electrical fault'.

Possibly a 'bad earth' somewhere. ;)

I get all 'wound-up' hearing about garages like that, and it is always best to get a second oppinion anyway. ^o)

Well when the RAC guy looked ,thats what he thought it was,and now thats what the garage are saying is wrong with it .anyway i wont use them again
which is a shame becasue they used to be really good, now i just think that they have got greedy. I will tell them that i wont be going back to them.
A friend has recomended a place about 25 mins drive from me,so will call them in the future
