Converting to a 6cyl

I didn't see a thread pinned, but I am guessing this has been asked before.

If I were to replace the M102 with a 6cyl, how hard a job is it?

What is involved? I heard that the engine mounts and gearbox bellhousing are compatible.

I was thinking of putting the 2.6 in.

Probably cheaper/easier to sell your M102 190E and buy a 190E 2.6. Not worth the aggro unless you've got an exceptional reason for the swap.

Agreed - there seem to be a host of little differences, the biggest of which is a detachable slam panel on the six.

Slightly different steering-column pitch is another, and one I'd like to hear more about.
A few people have mentioned to em at GTGs that the driving position in a 2.6 feels ever so slightly different to a 4-cylinder.
Not experienced it first-hand, would love to know more.

There's an obvious question that needs to always be asked before embarking on any kind of project like this:

Why try and build a car that already exists? It's not as if they're even expensive.

Will, people do this for loads of reasons maybe it's because he has a 190 shell he's very happy with and knows it would in fact be even more work or cost more to have a 2.6 which were as good.

I say go for it mate ;) Although I'd say have a think about the 3.0 M103 engine first as it'll be the exact same work :driver:

"A few people have mentioned to em at GTGs that the driving position in a 2.6 feels ever so slightly different to a 4-cylinder"

2.6 has a nice, slightly slimmer, leather steering wheel as standard, not like that horrid plastic shiny thing on four cylinder cars. It really does make more than a subtle difference to the feel of the car - more than you think. The Sportline leather wheel, being 10mm smaller, and chunkier is even better still.

You sort of get what I am thinking.

At the moment, I am spending quite a bit on my 190E, underneath it's quite solid (one or two rust patches here and there, nothing major)

If I were to convert the engine, it would be a little way off yet. next item on the list is suspension and brakes. Problem is that if I buy an uprated suspension kit (the original shocks and springs are a bit knacked), it sort of means I am committed.

I would also try to change the engine myself, the engine shouldn't be THAT expensive surely?

You will be able to pick up a 3.0l engine pretty cheaply. But just be aware of the amount of work you will have to do. The old slam panel will need cutting out and replacing with one from a 2.6. The front lower cross member will need altering to be able to fit the much bigger radiator needed. The brakes, diff, prop, suspension and probably driveshafts will all need upgrading.

I'm sure there is more stuff i'm forgetting about.

But if your up for it, then go for it.

But i do kind of agree that it would be much easier and most likely cheaper to buy a 2.6 to begin with and put a 3.0l in as a replacement.
