Hi Knowledgable ones I have a 2.5 16 and used to have a 2.6 until i killed it. I thought the basis of them was very much the same especially as my 2.6 looked to all intents and purposed like a cossie anyway. Kitted and lowered from new. The question is, can i fit the springs and dampers from a 2.6 into the 16 valve as, to be frank, the 2.6 was a far better day to day car from a comfort point of view. Sacrilige i know but there you go. Thanks keith |

As in sportline options from factory, or generic aftermarket lowering springs? I think I am right in saying the springs will be rated not only for the weight of the car due to its engine type but also the options fitted to it. When I had sportline springs fitted to my 2.6, I had to list the options fitted to it so the right part spring numbers corresponded. A 2.6 auto with all the trimmings (heated seats, air con etc will require different sportline springs from a basic 2.6 let alone a 1.8 or 2 litre. Stu |

The rear of the 16v will have SLS so you cant fit 2.6 springs on the rear. As others have mentioned on the front you need to pay attention to the weight, although I couldnt possibly advise it I found out I have been using 2.0 springs on my 3.0(originally 2.6) for a couple of years now. It certainly sits lower than intended but they havent snapped ...... YET

They will.............. My 2.6 sat low at the front when I bought it and both springs had cracked - 2 litre springs! It seems they are easier to find and cheaper than 2.6 springs so a lot get replaced with them by cheapskate owners or garages that cant be arsed to check. Stu |

I bought mine as 2.6 springs but it turns out the ebayer just wanted to sell them. They were actually from a 2.0. |

I wasnt suggesting you were a cheapskate Kenny! The previous owner of my 2.6 must have been. Bit off topic sorry. I wouldnt swap stuff around Desmoboy unless you have knowledge of exactly how it will affect the car. Where are you based? Ukmerctechie in Cheshire is the man to see. Stu |

The parts manager at my local main dealer showed me the chart Mercedes use for selecting the correct springs for the 190, model by model and then with the many variations dependent upon what options the car is fitted with. I was gobsmacked at how many different springs there are. When my daily driver 2.6 springs need replacing, I'll order them from the main dealer and get the right ones for the job. I only plan on doing it once.....I did buy a used set of springs off ebay a couple of years ago, before I learned this, so they never got fitted. Fortunately, my Sportline's springs were replaced (with the correct units) by a Mercedes specialist two years ago - at the previous owner's expense, which was a bonus - but at least I know the car rides as it was always designed to. This is one area where I think (for every day use) that Mercedes development and testing experience may just have the edge on that of the enthusiast and I bow to their greater knowledge. They have been making cars for over a hundred years, after all! |

Hi Stu what i was trying to get across and obviously not very clearly is that my current 2.5 16v is a VERY commited and firm ride. The 2.6 that i had previously was a much more comfortable yet still competent ride. The 2.6 was lowered and kitted from new by the factory and looked for all the world like a cossie yet it was comfortable and still handled. If i could get that 2.6 quality of ride into my 16v i would be a very happy bunny. Dont want to sell it as i am well along the route to converting it to a standalone ECU but i do want that 2.6 feel back into my driving. Keith |

2.5-16s do not have a naturally hard ride. They are a little firm but thats all. If you feel like your back is going to break driving over a speed bump then I would suggest a new pair of spheres on the rear suspension. Its really like fitting new shock adsorbers and can make a big difference to the ride quality. The rear springs will not support the weight of the car without hydraulic pressure from the sls and are only there to assist the rams. |

If it was factory fitted then it sounds like a sportline option. Have you cheked your VIN to see? Stu |
