A friend of mine runs a Spax kit on his BMW, They are good (adjustable) shocks, but are maybe a bit too hard for a Mercedes?

Longest build time in history?
Adjustables are only available for the 2.3/2.5-26v models i think from Spax.

I definitely suggest a kit of springs and shocks as they should really be replaced together if at all possible. If you are wanting to upgrade the handing then i would wait until you really needed either spings or shocks (put up with it before hand), and buy the Boge-Sachs kit from GSF for £199. From experience, you can't go wrong. :)

You can have Spax or Apex shocks but it's better to save your money and change all at once. Shocks and springs as a Lowering kit. I think starting prices for a lowering kit is a bit less than £300.00 from those two firms.
