I have always been under the impresion to always get new shocks and springs if you are goin to lower your car? i have just got a 190 with bilstine (spelling is rubbish but you get my drift) shocks and lowered springs, thay look in good condition cant see no leaks, the springs have light surface rust, but the question i ask is, do shocks loose their stiffness over time and if so do thay do it buy a lot? will it be worth me using them on my car or will i be better off gettin new? Many Thanks povey |

bilsteins are OEM shocks (in other words ,the car was built with them on ) ....................as far as lowering the car,the standard shocks can handle a 40mm drop without any problem, any lower then you're talking sports shocks. as them getting tired and losing stiffness, yes the do over many years (10-15 years plus)...............a easy explanation of a shocker is,imagine a bicycle pump filled with oil or gas and the bottom blocked,so yes the seals wear and they become softer...........a easy test is,take turns bouncing each corner, push down,it should come up and then rest in its normal position,if it doesnt then it is starting to get a bit tired.if it bounces 2-3 times then it shagged and needs replacing.price,if i remember correctly, mine cost front £65 rear £30 |

Bilstein also do a sports range (fantastic in my opinion), and a range called 'stock' these are specifically for lowered springs. They also do a HD, heavy duty range but I dont know much about them, the clue is in the name I guess ![]() Any idea which ones you have ? |

And, IMHO, they are the best mass-manufactured shocks around Don't neglect the top mounts, bump-stops & any rubber bushes Nick Froome www.w124.co.uk |

They sound in good condition. The 'stock'(shortened), sports, and HD ones are all yellow. Not sure about the standard ones. I assume they are black ? |

Shocks are very much a wear item. Many people are surprised when they find out from their garage that their shocks are shagged, after caning over speed humps on a regular basis. Normally a car will feel very bouncy whilst you're driving if they're tired, as it's the spring doing most of the work. |
