Noticed this odd behaviour in my car:
Go along about 5-20mph in neutral.
Without using the clutch, try to put in any gear (don't force it, just use the same force you'd normally use to engage gear or a bit less).
There's a single loud clonk from somewhere down below which feels like it goes the length of the car. It's a loud thunk.

Can anyone see if they get this too? It's the exact same sounding clonk that I get if I don't change gear smoothly enough, and I find it very hard to drive without the clunk happening at least some of the time. It also sometimes does the same clonk if you're stationary and with the clutch down you engage first gear ready to pull away. Weird.

My flex discy things look absolutely fine and one is new :/

I'm guessing a warn spline to the mid coupling on your drive shaft.

It's almost definately drive shaft related.....or at least that would be where I'd be investigating.

So basically the propshaft then?
Thought i must have been the gearbox because of the way it does it even before you try to pull away or let the clutch off.

could well be, in fact the more I think about it, the more I think it is the 'box.

either way, the prop shaft is coming off first and is quite an easy job to remove.

From your description it could also be excess play in the diff.

The clutch drags ever so slightly even when fully disengaged. The clunk you get when engaging gear at rest is that drag rotating the gearbox internals, the propshaft, the guibos, the diff pinion, etc. taking up the slack/play in each. The cumulative play causes the clunk.

It is very hard to eliminate as each of the rotating members aft of the clutch, as they age, add their bit to the cumulative play.
