Auto box clunk when shifting from D to R, but only quickly!

So, my '84 190E 2.0 with 35k miles often gives a heavy clunk when shifting from D to R or vice versa, but only really when done in quick succession, if you leave gap of a minute or so then there no clunk. At 25 years old and 35k miles it obviously hasn't been used much but thats not necessarily a good thing, lots of stuff can perish or seize instead of wear, had one brake pad rusted to the caliper for example. Its just back from a service and I got the ATF and filter changed and the flexidiscs are fine, propshaft has no issues either.

There is also what may be a related issue in that the engine revs can also sometimes drop to 500 rather than the 700/800 thats normal. Its just had a new distributer cap and rotor, and new HT leads as all were 25 years old and starting to corrode etc. However, the engine revs can still sometimes drop resulting in a "shaky" engine, does this effect the gearbox? Seems to be brought on by blipping the throttle, rev it to 1500 and release and it'll drop to 500, the engine will shake as if about to cut out, then rise again to 700 or so. Although the gearbox clunk can occur even when the engine hasn't been shaky.

I've a list of other suggestions from an earlier post on the low revs issue, such as the idle air control valve, but the mechanic, who specializes in classic MB's, has suggested it may be that the timing chain is slack, its a simplex chain rather than a duplex on an '84 car, resulting in valve open/shut times being off a bit. He says he'll check this out and let me know. He says this may also be the cause of the gearbox clunk but says he's not an auto gearbox expert.

Any more suggestions welcome!

Have massive doubts that there is a t/chain issue.

I too doubt its the chain.

Have you checked or had the autobox fluid level checked properly? A low fluid level will give problems as will leaks in the autobox vacuum system, which can also alter the idle of the engine.

I agree with Richy 190E, I would first check ALL vacuum pipes as these will detieriate with time and a leak in one of those COULD affect the Auto Box.

Thanks chaps, after having a listen my mechanic says the timing chain is fine. ATF and filter were changed this week even though they were quite new. I'll get the vacuum pipes checked for leaks etc. and report back!

Oh, and by the way, is there a diagram or list somewhere of "ALL" the vacuum hose to check? Are we talking 5 hoses or 55?

Sorrty to bring this one up again but I am having similar symptoms. When moving from park to reverse or drive the change is always very slow taking up to 5-6 to respond and when it does it pulls the engine revs very low making the car almost stall at times. This doesnt always happen but the very slow gear box responce is always there and very anoying when trying to manuvere the car quickly.

I've changed the gear box filter gasket and oil recently and I was pleased with the differnece but this problem is still very much there unfortunately.

I'm guesing its a vaccum leak or a bad modulator..... Which vacuum line affects this. Is there much work invovled in changing the modulator?

There is a vacuum modulator dial under a rubber cover on the left side of the tranny towards the top . Try adjusting it .
