Hi! My car failed an MOT recently because of one of the rear lower arm bushes, the outer one, was too worn. Well, I didnīt think it would be much of a hazzle to fix, so I bought the parts and gave it a go. But my job stops pretty quickly, since I donīt even get the center bolt off. Iīve cracked my tools on this, but still no luck! Has someone done this successfully? Do I have to get the center bolt off or can you change the bushing with the parts on the car? |

Which bush are you talking about mate? The outer one on the rear lower arm is part of the hub rather than the rear lower arm. Its a sperical joint and requires either a hand press to do the job on the car or remove the hub and a flypress to remove it. Edited by Richy190E, Sat Oct 3, 2009 3:39 pm.

Itīs the outer one Iīm struggling with. If it had been on the rear arm it hadnīt been any problem at all, but since it sits on the hub it seems to be pretty complicated. Iīve tried to remove the whole hub, but it seems to be cursed cause it wonīt come loose no matter what I do. Are those hand- press tools available to buy or do I have to get a professional to do it? |

To do the job yourself you may be able to make a small puller. You'll need: A bolt (Long enough to pass through the joint and your socket) Nuts and washers for the above bolt A socket big enough for the joint to fit inside, yet small enough to rest on the shoulder of the hub. you'll need to disconnect the shock absorber, ARB droplink, hub end and lower the arm downwards. Set up the home made puller and extract the joint. push the bolt through a couple of the washers, then push them through the joint you want to remove, fit the socket on the other side of the joint with the open end facing the old joint. with the bolt threads protruding through the socket drive hole fit some more washers and finally a nut. tighten the nut and bolt and this should extract the joint. To refit use a large thick washer(s) on the outside of the hub, pass the bolt through, through the joint and through a socket big enough to rest on the shoulder of the new joint. tighten until the bush is home. No need to remove the hub really, although if it sounds too much for you its best not attempted. |

Its hard for me to advise because I normally do them under the flypress. But the method I posted should work. |

Yea, thatīs the one right there... Gotta check mine out and see if I can get that one sorted. Iīm a bit worried, as it seems to be pretty worn out that whole bush. I was actually thinking of the flypress solution myself, but as I didnīt get the hub out, I must be considering other options. How much can a professional charge me to change this bush? In case the whole car ends up in a pile of metal....

Just make sure to bring your own dogsled when you come! Cars are put away for winter next week, time to repair it for next season... Just watch out not to get caught in the customs trying to take your shotgun into the cabinet.... Sorry guys, can't resist takin' this a bit too far....

Okay, some updates on the cursed bush that the germans put in in the early 90s. After we made a special tool for this one, it gave up and came out! Input was a walk in the park with the tool wery much like a old socket. Now I got a new problem, when everything was back in pieces and I was trying to bleed the system, the nipple shreaded :C But hopefully it wonīt be too much of a problem to get working, just another annoying day of being without the baby... It seems that this confirms the theory that everything that possibly could go wrong, will do! In case anyone would need this tool, Iīll upload the drawing of it. http://img301.imageshack.us/i/model1.pdf/ |

You'll need a screw extractor like this to remove the bleed nipple.![]() Was it a press like I described you used in the end? |

Yeah, it was just tailored to fit the bush with about a millimeter. Extraction took about 1.5 mins with the tool, so it was really excellent! Where can I get those nipple extractors? Are they expensive? And talking about the nipples, what are the threads on them in case I need to make new thread? I assume itīs some inches, as I didnīt find any metric threading that fitted... |

I think they are metric, just fine pitch threads. |

Finally the baby is back on the road! The threads for the nipple were apparently M8, a little imbarrassed I didnīt realize it before. After a long time of bleeding (unnaturally long) I got all the air out of the system, but on the other hand did I refurbish one caliper and change all the rubberrings, as they were coming out. Apparently the caliper contains a whole lot of brake fluid.... Hereīs the drawing again, on demand ![]() Thanks for the info all! Great knowledge in here! |
