Longest build time in history?
|
As title, I thought the other night while i was with the car, i know, i'll just whip all the brakes and hubs and everything else off so i can deal with it next time i am up there. SO, the multi-spline nut that holds the hub, that has the destroy on removal lock tab too. What size/type/name socket do I need to remove this and where can i get one from? Is it best to do by hand with a telescopic 1/2" wheel brace type bar or with an air gun? Also, can anybody remind me of the size of top nut on the front struts? I think it's 22mm but i can't be sure. I bought the correct size hex key, but i need to find the correct size swan neck ring spanner. I know i don't have one in the right size. Are there any other tools I should get now, that i may now have before my next foray into stripping this bu&&er? I have most things but not sure what else. Ball joint separator? I don't want to disrupt my four full days next week with having to go out and buy new tools every five mins. lol, One more, does anybody have an old trolley jack handle that they no longer have the jack for? I've lost my handle (on life, some would say!) and cannot find it anywhere - bearing in mind i have just stripped my garage. It's definitely not there. |

do you mean the driveshaft nut mart ?.................if so its a normal mutli-point 30mm socket(not hexagon),and you can get a socket form any motor discount store, and to get it off i use a power bar with a 2ft scaffy pole as an extension lol as these can be reallyyyyyyyyyyy tightyes its 22mm,and you can use a normal ring/open end spanner as for the ball joint seperator i prefer the one you hit with a hammer hitting type Edited by shrekky, Thu Oct 8, 2009 11:39 am.

30mm mutli-point socket at a motor discount store is about a tenner, power bar will set you back about 20 quid, and it doesnt have to be a scaffy bar...................any pole that fits over the end will do(as long as it doesnt bend ) lol

he he he, got hundreds of pairs of pliers so i'm good on that. lol Well i don't know, i guess so if i am going to replace all the arms at some stage. Currently deciding whether to replace all the hardware on my arms with this polybush kit and OEM where appropriate, or to just buy the whole sets from that German seller. Not quite sure. |

That's the prob, it will be ending up as a track car i think more than anything. Probably going to have to get something a little more grown up soon-ish i think - but makes the Merc even more of a prized possession than ever which is cool! And means i can go a bit more serious on it, and spend a little more where i need to. |

Will do dude, how's the recuperation going matey? Seemed to have been a bit quiet lately? Yeah, i'll be up back home crack of sparrows on Thurs as i have to drop the lady off at Stanstead at four am. Sleep for an hour or few, and then crack on with the car. So any days if you are free would be great to see you, i've got a nice comfy chair in their too that you can advise/point/direct/laugh from if need be. Oh, and a heater and space! Last time you were over I think the garage was still full of shite! Going to see if Carl wants to come up too, but just getting voicemail at the moment. |

I've never used a balljoint splitter on mine, they can tear the seal/boot on the balljoint. I have a chisel which I use to splay the hub slightly and freeze release spray and they come out with a gentle pry with a bar to seperate. |

Hmmmm, that's a tip and half Richy, i like it. Although being rubber, does it not freeze to its' glass temperature and therefore make it easier to shatter? Am i right in assuming it's only any good for removing if you don't want to re-fit them again? (I'm not going to be re-installing them, just wondering, not even sure if it's correct to re-use them!) Just a thought, but I guess lighter fluid would have the same effect? Edited by Martrider, Fri Oct 9, 2009 11:55 am.

Any metal/metal joint it works excellent. As it freezes it cracks the sticktion of the joint between the metal and eases any interference fitting. Whats the rubber you speak of? The balljoint boot? If so you dont spray that. I spray the hub clamp portion, you need to rake the sealant out first and dont forget to reapply it once refitting the balljoint to the hub. |
