You can cut springs but its not ideal, as said play around with spring pads first, if you do decide to cut the spring cut one or two coils off at the most, two coils make a big difference!

I don't understand these spring pads, do you buy diffrent sizes to lower or raise the height? I was looking into getting some 40mm springs, but will these have a massive effect on the comfort of the ride?

They were used by M-B to make all the cars the same height , regardless of extras .

Nowadays you can use thinner ones to lower your car

Firstly:The spring pads are identified by the number of "tits" on their skirt (yes, this is beginning to sound a bit strange): the smallest pad has one tit, the thickest four. If you shine a torch on your upper spring seat you will see the pad skirt. Look or feel around the skirt for the tits.

Secondly: because of the 201's suspension geometery changing pads results in a ride height change ~1.5X the difference in pad thickness, i.e. if you put in a 10mm thinner pad you end up with ~ 15mm drop.

Thirdly: cutting sprigs is a legitimate means to ride height lowering but will stiffen your ride: a cut spring has a higher effective rate because of its fewer coils than the original un-cut spring. As recommended above play with the pads first then get out the grinder and cut.
