My 300TD needs a new automatic gearbox. My question is what would happen if i used a gearbox from a w201 or another w124? Would it still work?? |

Not sure but I can tell you my 190 has a 3.0 w124 engine mated to a 2.6 w201 autobox. The torque rating was checked and it was fine. |

I think the gearboxes on the 124's have a bigger sump. I don't know if this is necessary though and whether one from a 201 would be perfectly fine anyway. |

so the important thing to match is the torque ratings? What would happen if they slightly different? I know absolutely nothing about gearboxes!! |

The rev limit of the diesel engine is a lot lower than the petrols so the gearing is different. I think the torque convertor is different on the diesels too You'll make life a lot easier for yourself by locating a 300TD box. If you can't do that I think I'd use a 300TE box and the diesel torque convertor as long as there isn't lots of metal swarf floating about. It won't be "right" but I'm sure it'll work Nick Froome www.w124.co.uk Edited by bolide, Tue Nov 3, 2009 11:05 am.
