I am pretty new to doing any kind of work on any kind of vehicle, but keen on trying... I have this starting problem with my 1.8, 1992, petrol, manual... There is nothing coming out of the cold start valve as far as I can see, I have taken it out and reconnected it to see what the spray was like. Nothing. I have a brand new cold start valve, so assuming that it is working fine. I have no multimeter to test the current. Then I downloaded one of these diagrams for the starting circuit and by the looks of it the cold start valve goes straight to the fuel pump relay... Is it reasonable to think that the relay is kaput? However, there is definitely petrol coming out of the fuel distributor and also fuel pressure in the line going to the cold start valve... Could it be partially kaput? |

I,ve just had a look on my Haynes manual the 12v for the cold start comes from the ignition sw. also to the fuel pump relay. You only need a cheap test meter to test, cheaper than throwing parts at it. The ground connection is shown going through the thermo time valve. |

Many thanks for you reply... Sounds like this diagram I found doesn't show it the right way... I have another question and excuse my ignorance, but does the valve need to be earthed to be tested? Does the electric wire that connects to the valve have a '+' and a '-' so there is a current going through it when connected? Or does the valve need to be seated in its place to be earthed? Does that make any sense?

I just had that same problem, found the cure, the control circut is located behind the battery, pull out the plastic shield between the battery and bulk head, and behind that is a "3x"1 box with a clear cap. Flip it open and a 10 amp spade fuse is in it. Mine was burned and it would not energize cold start valve. A 10 cent fuse is all you need. |

Check the OPV fuse... a common problem is that they blow hence the cold start valve doesnt work |

I didn't see the need for a ten page essay I used carb cleaner to free up any gunk and then lots of WD40 to clean and also help lubricate the valve. |
