You need the key in the old barrel. I used two small Allen keys 2.5 or 3mm I think when I did mine. The only thing you need to work out is how to place your hands around so you push both allen in to press the retaining springs, while you pull out the barrel. Otherwise a 5-10 min job. I don't know anything about breaking it though. Edit: This may help Edited by alogaparaloga, Mon Nov 9, 2009 4:25 pm.

you need to thin pieces of metal to push down the side of the barrel so you to get it out. |

With the key in the barrel, turn the ignition switch to position 2. Insert two pieces of welding rod (or 2 x thin allen keys as suggested), filed down slightly at the ends, push the rods as far as they will go and if you're lucky the barrel will pull straight out. Then replace the barrel with a new one - available from M-B for about £30 with a new key. You will need proof of identity and proof of ownership or M-B won't sell you one. If you want a key to match your door locks, the dealer has to get one from Germany and the cost is about twice the price. |

Sorry, ignore the last bit, as you have a spare barrel. |

Hey all, I've got the same problem with my ignition. Unfortunately it decided to die in asda car park. Being auto it was stuck in park with the steering lock on, after many hours and big gauges in my driveway we got it off.. Anyway, I called Mercedes today and they quoted my an astonoshing £500 to replace the ignition barrell with the barrell itself costing £250. I've seen other posts quoting around £50-70 for a new ignition barrell. Has anyone else had to pay this kind of price or are Mercedes once again trying to totally rip me off? |

Get back to them and specify that you only need the tumbler and not the full steering lock. |
