I went to the dealer and i now have the correct grade ATF for my 126. Now i know my box does not have a leak, but the level is just below where it should be on the dipstick. It says in the book that i need to check the level when the box is warm, engine running, and in park. How do you guys check your atf? I have been checking it cold and as i say is down on where it should be. My worry is that the level will rise when the box is hot, is that likely? Or is it the case that if its showing as low when cold it really is low and needs topped up? I wasnt wanting to run it again low, but im worried that if i top up now based on the box cold level that when its warm i may have over filled it, know what i mean? My box holds 8 litres and bought 2 litres (2x 1 litre bottles) as a top up. That probably makes no sense above!!!

Hi Russell, I'd wait until you next intend on driving the car. To check the level 'hot' you do need to drive it a reasonable amount - I'd recommend a mixed drive of anything upto maybe 20 miles or so. Then check the level as described in the manual - engine running, level ground and in park. When was the ATF & Filter last replaced? Does the box change up/down smoothly and as it should? Could be a good opportunity to have filter/fluid done in the new year if it's coming up for a change - and set the level at the same time. It shouldn't alter at all unless there's a leak somewhere (?) Will |

Cheers Will Cant recall when it last had a filter / fluid change (id need to look through the history) but i know it wasnt long ago. Its very clean looking certainly. The box changes up and down silkily. Was planning a full service come the Summer to include box fluid and filter change. As you say i can set the level then and monitor, it doesent appear to have a leak as ive checked it frequently (always forget when its hot, but certainly the cold level has never decreased). |

The box might have used some if the wrong grade was put in before ( you say you now have the correct grade ) Run the car as Will says and then top it up while warm then you cant overfill, just add a small amount at a time. |

Unfortunately not all MB dealers carry staff who know our cars inside out. So there is a chance the wrong grade was used. |

It will be below the full mark if you check it when it's cold and will come up to the full mark when checked as it should,- warm with the engine running. |

Which is why a lot of people(mostly hapless mechanics)overfill the gearboxes which inevitably leads to them going pop. They don't know the correct procedure for checking the level and think it's just like topping the engine oil up. |
