Iggy, never heard of it being done, of course that does'nt mean it can't. The advntages would be in theory better MPG and I'd presume faster in gear acceleration i.e. quicker overtaking. If it mates to the 2.6 block (reckon it will) you may need a modified prop and there maybe ECU issues as I suspect but can't remember off hand that the 5sp had it's own ECU?

I understand the 4sp box is stronger than the 5sp.

Dont do it , the 4 speed box is much better than the 5 speed , it is much stronger and less prone to problems .

Apperantly the 5th gear is nothing but agg .

I was really pleased when I found out that my 320 coupe had a 4 speed rather than the more expensive - at the time - 5 speed .

If the five speed box is goodun the car will be more drivable BUT and this is a big BUT you will find it hard to find a good one as most cars being stripped now adays will have high mileage etc on them and a re-build is very expensive if re-quired.
Oh an BTW the gear boxes out of Early W210's are identical thats where I source the replacement box for my CE it came out of a w210 300 Turbo Diesel

I have the five speed in my CE and when it works top end acceleration is much better however as far as I know the other gears are of a similar or maybe identical ratio to a four speeder with the 5th being an O/D gear.

I have a spare 5 speerd 722.5 box but it needs a re-build!! :)

The 5-speed uses a solenoid to shift between 4th and 5th and this is controlled by an ECU. So the 5-speed has another level of complexity. Whilst it's possible to fit a 5-speed I suspect the amount of work involved would make it uneconomic

I think the only exception would be if you were transplanting an engine & box - a 300-24 + 5-speed or a 280/320 + 5-speed. If you're doing that then you'll be expecting all the hard work

I must say the idea of a 190E with a 2.8/3.2 has being going round my mind the last couple of days...

Well Nick Snap cause I am seriously cotemplating fitting the 300-24 valve engine out of the 124 saloon into my 2.6 gearbox and all although the saloon has the 4 speed transmission.

Is fitting the early 104 engines not easier than fitting the later M104's I am presuming it is as its still EZL ignition etc less electrics to worry about etc????

I will start this project once I have my CE running and my LT35 fully operational so I hope that will be mid summer ;)

Based on no experience at all I'd say that the early M104 will be much easier

I think that combo would be ideal with a longer (numerically smaller) diff so you could cruise at no revs. Estate diffs are shorter so no good. Maybe a diff from a 320 or an SL?

I have a vague feeling that 190 diffs are smaller and not as strong as W124 ones so a diff swop might not be a bad idea. You'll want to be changing the diff bushes anyway
