In the last few days it's become difficult to select gears(mainly 1st and reverse) with the engine running. When i do get it in gear and hold the clutch down there's a godawful grinding noise.Release bearing shot or something worse ?

1st and reverse can be a sign of a shot clutch. or a leaking hyd circuit.

Usually just a repset and a regrease is enough but you could replace the slave cylinder whilst its all apart but that would put an extra £20 odd quid on the parts bill.
