Hi,

I'm looking to get a 16v soon and one unit I saw was a 2.5-16 auto.
If I need to convert to manual gertrag, what are the precautions? or any setback compared to original manual.

Advice please, thank you

Been running thru some post on the matter, I've read a reply from Conrad :

As Jesper said to me:

You'd need to change:
transmission
Flywheel
Clutch
Driveline
Shifter and shift rods
Pedal assembly (and run hydraulic lines for the clutch)
Master cylinder or master cylinder reservoir

None of those things are especially complicated to change, but the time and labor involved adds up to quite a bit of work.

----
My additional question: do I need to change the rear differential too? are they the same between manual & auto?

Thanks

People have done this conversion, but I personally wouldn't.

Why try and build a car that you can already buy? Plus you'll lose the originality, and have to declare the conversion to your insurers as the car has been subject to modification, etc.

Bearing in mind you're starting with a blank canvas (ie, haven't bought a car yet), just wait for the right car to come up - in manual! ;)

In this case Will, I actually agree :D

The originality issue aside;

2.5-16 Manuals are not that hard to find, Autos actually seem to come up less often.
Unless you rebuild Manual gearboxes for a living, and can source a known good Getrag, then it does seem daft to do a conversion like that on a car that's new to you.

It's different with cars like JM Motorsports, as his gearbox conversion was just one item near the top of a long list for a specific project, and no doubt it was a good car that he trusted and didn't want to let go of in order to hunt down a Manual.

wir, I would advise either buying a Manual, or being prepared to live with an 2.5-16 Auto for 6 months or so whilst you figure out how good the whole car is.
Worst thing would be to buy a seemingly good Auto (with the intention of an immediate Manual conversion) and start finding some horrors as you take it to bits.

Unless you're a fan of epic projects

I agree try to find a good manual instead, its a lot of work involved doing the conversion, its getting harder sourcing the bits needed, and it will set you back a lot.

Im located in Sweden, and the 2.5 is a very rare care here, less then 15 cars were sold new here, so the majority has been imported in the late 90s. By now most have had +10 owners, mostly younger people. I needed to turn my eyes on Germany to find my car, i was looking for a manual, but didnt find anything i liked. But then a automatic turned up for reasonable money, and only one owner, so i bought it. It was totatlly standard when i bought it, i could agree that some people think its a shame that i have modified it so heavily in the last couple of years. But ive pretty much replaced every single bolt on it, so i would probably call it a 7 on a "modified concourse" scale.

Just buy a manual one to begin with.

Also don't discount a manual 2.3.

I know, I know!, but I can't find one in the market yet. FYI, I'm in Malaysia. And I had one, a 2.3 manual bought in the UK brought it Malaysia - sold it after 8 years, and recently discovered it was converted to auto!!!

There is one good unit, a 2.5 auto in the local market, and I'm just toying the idea if a manual unit does not appear. But I'm sure it will pop up soon.

Thanks guys. Good point and I think I'll wait. No rush really actually.

I converted an auto to manual , and if you have ALL the bits ready to do the conversion or a good local dealership for the clutch pipe , ( you might need a VIN number from a manual 2.5-16 for this , always useful to be honest ) , it can be done in a couple of days , add to the list a leather gaiter and plastic trim surround .
