Hi
went for a drive today, not too far, afrer stopping at the lights i went to pull away and it took a while to find the gears, this happened
about 4 times,i got home in what i think was 2nd gear, now i can put the car in reverse but does sod all when i put it in drive.
drive,just wont move.
Car had a full service in November,so im sure all the fluids were all topped up,this as only just happend, seems very odd
Am i looking to replacing the gearbox and would it just go like that? How much to fix? I have already spent around £700 on having a new fuel monitoring system installed, then the full service, total spent around £1100,this would be the final nail in the coffin for me i think
Let me know what you think guys, would also be looking for someone to fix it if my local guy is too dear

Thanks

Yes it may be that simple :)

dont stress until you know the fluid is clean , doesnt smell burnt and topped up (engine running etc as in the manual)

if all is well there then you may be looking at worn selector bushes or a vacuum leak (maybe, unsure but worth a look). Dont put yourself in the vulnerable position of having the box changed by putting words in a mechanics mouth, or convincing yourself its the gearbox itself. keep it simple an it could save ££'s.

Cheaper to get a second hand box,the bands are about £200 and it involves a box strip and rebuild.

Ukmerctechie (Andy) sorted my auto gearbox where all others failed, reading between the lines, unfortunately think a recon-box is required.

DOnt know what your locals labour rate is but factory time is 5.4hrs.
You will need a box/sump gasket/filter and fluid.
Maybe worth replacing the flex discs if there worn.
Dont tell the garage anything, ask them whats wrong with it.

Not your job to explain it,just tell them itgoes backward but wont go forward.
The reason it is doing that is it uses differnt operating elements to engage reverse than it does in drive.
If you take it to a Merc specialist worth his salt,it will be easy for them to diagnose as it is a well known fault.

Gearbox £250ish
Filter/gasket/fluid £50
Labour £300ish
Might even find a good box a lot cheaper than that.

It's got to be worth fixing as IIRC your 190E was a clean car :)

A good secondhand gearbox is all you really need, and even at MB specialist rates it's worthwhile. You won't buy another good car for less than the repair costs IMHO.

Bad start to 2010 but it's all relative - people lose more than that in depreciation in a few months or less on newer cars ;)

Yes will your right, i will never buy a new car again, and will stick to buying older Mercs i think
even when they go wrong, they must still work out cheaper then buying new.
I was also toying with the idea of buying a W124 in the future, what do you guys think?

On the contrary - it's a viable repair ;)

I guess what I mean is - respectable MB specialist - perhaps slightly more expensive than an 'under the arches' back-street garage.

Some local general firms are okay and cheaper than marque specialists, but there's often an associated risk as to whether they know what they're doing or not :ermm:

I guess potentially, you could find a gearbox for next to nothing (£50-100) and have it fitted for peanuts by someone who'd work for a fair bit less than £50/hour.

Just depends on how sensible they are :D

Some are okay, others - ermm - :'(

where do you take your cars to get repaired?
Or do you do them yourself?

Depends - I do the majority of stuff myself, but there's also some decent local specialists around here. I wouldn't do a gearbox myself in this weather though :$

Where abouts are you in Surrey?

I can recommend some proper MB specialists, who would likely charge a similar amount to UKmerctechie's (very fair) estimate labour wise, otherwise it'll be down to whatever local garage you can trust.

Only trouble with going for a non-MB specialist is that what you save on an hourly rate might cost you with a longer number of hours, or a greater risk of them making a mistake somewhere. Depends on how well you know/trust them :)

Another excellent car - similar to the 190, but arguably better built. I think I myself will have to have a W124 coupe some time, as they are just lovely!

If drive just suddenly went bang then I second that. Happened to me in my 2.0litre too, you're looking at a new box unfortunately :(

I hope it doesn't end up costing you an arm and a leg though...

Listen Lee , first of all dont panic .

Transmissions can be had for found all day long for £150 or less .

I have also been at garages where they have swapped the 'boxes inside an hour , I once saw 3 guys change a Granada 'box in 17 minutes !!

If you like your car , ( you obviously do ) then it is definately worth repairing .

If you are a member of AA / RAC then towing is free , so factor in about £150 labour from a friendly garage , say £300 all in .

Hope this helps .

Jeremy
