When I bought my 190 the backrest wouldn't move when the door mounted switch was moved! The seller said it was an easy fix and he was certain a squirt of WD40 directly into the switch would do the trick - I was dubious, but was assured the switch had worked earlier and this was the solution!! The seat back position is almost where is almost in my ideal position, but I want to fix it. Anyway, I've taken the switch cap cover off and sprayed WD40 in through the hole, as directed, but this hasn't done anything at all!! The other seat functions work fine. What is the best way to tackle this problem- any ideas? David |

I would be inclined to take the switch out and check the wiring first, as if the other seats work it is at least a little localised. I suspect a wire loose somewhere, but that's only a guess. Good luck. |

oil and electronics are never a good combination, it's probably either a loose wire or a dirty contact. my guess it's a contact from what you mentioned by the PO, pull the switch, and use electrical contact cleaner...no WD40... if that doesn't work then start checking your wiring |

Thanks for the suggestions lads, I'll have a closer look. I feel foolish for believing that WD40 solution!! |

no real harm is done, although you may get a funny smell out of your switch if you use it with the wd40 still inside |

You could also try taking the relay out and puting it back in, it could be one of the pins with a dodgy connection. I think position 'B' and it should have a 25 A fuse in it (blue) |

dude, do you know the location of the seat relays? mine no longer go backward and forwards but they both stopped working at the same time so i suspect the relay, i just don't know where it is. It's not a major problem as the seat is right where i want it, it would just be nice to have it working |

I'm not sure with your model but most the relays are under the black plastic cover in front of the fuse box. In there there is I think five places for relays, Now this is hard to explain but in that box there is two places at the rear, two in front of them, and one across in front of them, I know with mine LHD it is the rear one on the inside, or as you are looking at it from the 'single place' end it will be the farthist one on the left, position B. Hope that helps, But check connections and fuse Number 12, Cheers Barrie. |

That relay controls the seats and windows, the passenger seat on my car wouldn't move at one time I found that if a pressed the memory button for the seat in modes 1 and 2 it would free the seat and then it would start moving again (I might have just been lucky but it could be worth a go!) |

Nope, that one (relay)doesn't control the windows, position R2 controls the windows and that is IN the fuse box, Also the left one at the back but for the Seat adjustment you need to be in the box in FRONT of the fuse box. But both the windows and seats get their power from FUSE 12

Carried out some exploratory work today and looked in the relay box and removed some of the relays and then put them back - this did nothing. Removed the two 25 amp fuses and that did nothing either!! I tried to get the E/S control unit out of the door card to look at the connections, but it wouldn't squeeze out. So I removed the door card and checked it out by pulling the connections out and looking at the pins. They all looked pretty good to me, but the plastic rain sheet had been tampered with around the unit, but not elsewhere; ah ha!!! I then re-fitted the card (properly this time; as it wasn't before I started due to shoddy workmanship!!) and couldn't get the interior release handle back in situ as I had already screwed the E/S unit back in place ....feck, feck and more FECK!!! Anyway, when trying the switch I noticed that there was a faint, sort of clicking, sound coming from under the seat. I'm now thinking that the problem is perhaps there, but don't want to start taking seats out if this sounds like a bad idea!!??? I also noticed that the memory function doesn't work - a related problem? Come on you electrical wizards!! |
