It's always been dodgy getting my manual 190E into 1st - seems to be getting worse - usually happens when I'm at the head of the queue to pull away at the lights ! Once moving, the other gear shifts are not too bad - but notchy, but OK Any one else have / had this problem ? Is a new set of the rubber bushes between selector rods and gearbox likely to improve things ? Or adjusting the relevant rod length ? Any advice welcomed Howard Bath England '93 1.8 190E 5-speed manual |

^^^^^ What Shrekky said. I had the same problem some years back when I had an Astra .In stop start traffic it was impossibe to select first gear. It was the clutch. The clutch didnt have any of the usual symptoms such as slippng though. Edited by MadMike, Thu Jan 28, 2010 2:46 pm.

I'm having the same problem, I thaught it might be master and/or slave cylinder seals. Iv changed the slave but it's not done anything. Will do the master this or next weekend and let you kno. The clutch it's self was my last resort. |

I have the same problem and is mainly due to the clutch system. That could involve hydraulics that need bleeding or replacement or the clutch itself. I also expect to need linkage bushes shortly as I have checked mine and there is a lot of play there. |

small update, iv now changed both master and slave cylinders, and changed a large amount of linkage bushes as they were looking tired. it now selects gears much better but its still not perfect. i got hold of a new clutch for £20 bargin!! but iv not put that in yet and im in no rush to either, dont think mine is all that bad. |
