Hi guys,
Andy might be able to answer this one,but if anyone else has experienced this please let me know.
Its a 2ltr Sportline,160,000 miles.
It starts fine and drives well, but a wierd noise is coming from the gearbox area,it sounds like a dry bearing,
The noise mostly goes away when drive is selected,it is more noisy when cold
It can be heard more inside the car ,than outside, the gearbox oil is spot on.[I changed the oil six months ago.
The gearchanges are fine, now and again a bit of a clunk,I put that down to back lash in the diff,[
I dont use the s mode on the box,[well not when the wife is in the car]
Its only when the car is stationary,
thanks.

after hours of research on the net,
It looks like my noise is normal rolling noise from the front gear assembly, which cannot be eliminated,
It is funny I never noticed it before,
looks like the radio is going to be turned up.
I dont mind as long as I am not doing more damage
,the acceleration in S mode is fantastic and that is on lpg. I will just see what develops

I've noticed this on various MB boxes. Some produce quite a noise in P, others are noisy in one gear and not the others. I haven't seen any correlation between noise & box failure so I put it down as a characteristic of them at this age

Cheers Nick, this noise its like a whirring sort of noise,
I will just go on using it,
but will keep a look out for another auto box, even if I dont use it ,it can keep all the other spares company in the shed.
My other two 190s were manual,I have had this auto for two years, with no problems, so cant complain,
