Hi guys, When I start my car it turns off after 5 seconds, I know its the fuel cutting out. I've been having some problems with my fuel pump relay but fixed it by sandpapering the contacts and cleaning it but then I hit a big pot-hole in the street and the car just died, now it turns on for 5 seconds then cuts out. If I jump the fuel pump relay two pins with a wire it will start and run so I am guessing its the fuel pump relay but that doesn't really seem consistent with hitting a pot hole? Relay looks undamaged.. any suggestions? |

What you describe is typical of a dry joint in the soldering on the pcb of the fuel pump relay. If you are capable I would suggest you have a look in the relay and try to find it. Its just a simple matter of re soldering the offending joint! Sometimes it is difficult to see so re solder all the joints! |

Its the pothole that's made the dry joint worse Kenny has done a tutorial on it at the top of this section.

Hey guys I resoldered any dodgy looking joints as best I can and still does the same thing, turns off after a couple of seconds. The fact it even starts make me suspicious its something not a dry joint. Does anyone know what the fuel pump relay does after 2-3 seconds? Or which joint it might specifically be if a certain capacitator or chip has a function after 2-3 seconds |

It does sound like the relay. I found when mine was fault it supplied enough to start the car but as soon as I revved it would die because its not actually pumping so the fuel isnt supplied with enough pressure. Did you try cleaning the relays ? When you open the fuel pump you can see a couple of lovely tech looking open relays. Spray some paper with wd40 put it between the moving part of the relay and the stationary contact, press them together gently and pull the strip through. Did you looks at the close up pics I did somewhere, often a dry joint is almost impossible to see with the eye. Often I just resolder as many as I can be bothered to do. What the part number of the relay, you may find someone with a spare to test with. I have one but its from a 6 cyl. |

Does anyone know what pins or what is meant to activate the 'big coil' ? From what I can tell pin 15 is where the relay gets a signal that the car is running as that voltage only starts when the car is on, but from the circuit board I can only trace it to the small coil. My problem is the big coil isn't being activated |
