Front window not working (unless 'helped')

Hi all.

Front passenger window is not working - seems like the mechanism is straining. It will move a tiny bit but only with a lot of help.

Got a spare drivers door and took the window mechanism off to give myself and idea of what i'm in for but I can't see how I would open the actual mechanism or indeed, remove anything from it!

Any ideas?
Am I being REALLY stupid?

Would like to recondition all units eventually - worked wonders after doing it in my Golf so much quieter and smoother.

Thanks in advance.

It may have come out of the runners.
Take the door card off (Lift up, DONT pull outwards, when all bolts and things have been removed) and check and grease everything

It seemed to get slower and slower over time.
If memory serves me correct, I was able to get a screwdriver in to adjust the worm screw tension adjuster on the motor shaft which seemed to give it a a little more movement.

It's a door card removal definate, firstly you could try spraying 'Silicon oil' in the runner channels.

If that doesn't work then it will be a motor off and cleaning and re-greasing it needs ;)
that is if it hasn't jumped one of the channels.

Ok, finally got round to doing this but have hit a problem ...

took trim off and just covered EVERYTHING with WD40. the window finally sprang into action. It goes down great over the full travel but struggles to go above 3/4 up - the front of the window seems to be dragging - not being lifted as much as the rear.

Haynes says something about lowering it with 3 of the screws loose and the I'm lost (read: thick)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in anticipation

It probably wants a new motor.

I had a dead window on the N/S/F on my car also. Power was getting to the motor terminals ok (diagnosing motor fault) so I sourced a replacement.

Whilst starting to strip the motor out, it briefly showed signs of life. You could get the motor to move the regulator mechanism and pop the window down/up for just a couple of seconds, or indeed a bit longer if 'helped'. It wasn't fully retracting or closing the window unassisted though.

The regulator mechanism was however in perfect condition and not siezed or sticky - although I naturally cleaned and lubricated it whilst it was accessible.

New motor fitted and it shoots the window up and down very quickly and positively.

There was a very nice chap on the forum who offered me a motor before I managed to source one locally - if you like I can PM you his details? :)

sorted - thought the whole motor and cog/worm drive assembly came off, not just the motor.

If you don't mind PM'ing me his details that would be great - like to do the drivers side as well - seems to be struggling.....

Job done!!!!!!!!!

Just cleaned and greased everything - used a motor cleaner (from my radio control car days) .

Annoying thing is that I couldn't actually find anything that was wrong - the grease was OK and not dried out, all mechanisms/joints/pivots were fine so lets see how long it lasts.

It's surprising what stripping, cleaning and re-greasing can save in new parts, go in most garages today and they won't entertain repairing just replacing, they have their reasons but that is the advantage of 'Forums' such as this, it's called "Learning By Asking and Doing"

So true - early on in our ownership of the car it was failed on its MOT because the wiper was moving too slowly (Merc 'specialist'). We later found out that this is not an MOT failure but unfortunately by then had paid about £400 for them to fit a complete second hand mechanism. I now see that the lot can be taken apart and greased - VERY annoyed!

The winder now makes one hell of a racket - any ideas why?
It just seems to be very VERY loud.
It's not a clunking or anything, just electric motor noise - should there be any sound insulation on the body of the motor where it touched the metal of the inner door panel?
Thanks.
