i just got a 90 its a very nice car its my first mb. the transmission wont shift into highgear? any idea of common problems on this model. it seem to shift fine most of the time, but some times its hard in the shift. and some times it seems like its not down shifting to first on a stop, then when you go slow and it kicks down hard into first. the trans fluid seems new. also its very hard to start when stilling for a hour or more? then it idles rough about 500 rpm. but once you get out on the road i just run out first gear and its fine after that idles smooth till it sit again. if you could help thanks |

The auto boxes start off in second gear unless you pre select first or floor the accelerator. So it will only change gear 3 times making you think it has only gone up to 3rd. Harsh gear changes usually mean the bowden cable needs adjusting. The bowden cable in the one below the accelerator cable on the throttle body. If you do a search you will find quite a few posts on this subject and how to adjust it. And welcome to the forum by the way. Stu |

Too Far Gone To Help

There are a zillion and one things that would not help cold starting , we normally start with the usual servicing items , however , if you are close by to an Independant Mercedes Specialist then I recommend getting them to plug your car into a Star Diagnostic Machine for a read out , this saves just throwing parts at it . Hope this helps , and welcome to the site . Jeremy |

Yep, same with mine. It is only a four speed transmission, so they can be a bit "busy" at higher speeds. |

Indeed, perfectly normal revs for that speed. You still have over 3000 RPM left to get you to 130mph+ |

Are you sure about that Jeremy? I thought the Star Diagnosis was only good for the modern models.

As Michael says, star isn't what you need for a W201. The gearboxes on these cars are pretty basic. It's vacuum that will determine how 'smooth' the shift is AFAIK, if there's little/no vacuum the shift quality will be poor=hard. As Stu says, it sounds as though your box is changing as it should - it starts in 2nd, changes to 3rd and then into 4th/top. ~ 3000RPM at around 70mph sounds perfect to me. It won't change down to 1st gear ever on the downshift, only upon kickdown or by manipulating the lever through D-3-2 etc will you ever be able to use 1st gear. First things first though, I'd check the fluid level as mentioned in the owner's handbook and then look at the cable adjustment. Will |
