I dont think I'm the only one asking these, but is it a pain in the **insert swear word here** to change the bulbs in the dials??

Which dials? If it's the heater dials, they pull off to reveal the bulbs. It's best to use a pair of pliers as they can be a bitch to get off. But make sure you protect the dials with a rag.

Kenny has done a great post on removing the dash which shows you how to remove things like this. It's pinned in the interior section.

The instrument cluster is pretty hard to pop out, best access from underneath by removing the plastic cover and an airvent pipe. Then remove the speedo cable and push the whole cluster aganist the steering wheel. The cluster is held on by nothing, itīs just a tight fit and the speedo cable. After this it is no problem to change the bulbs, thereīs two in the upper end of the cluster.

Yes, I agree. They are a pain to replace. So is the bulb in the auto gearchange that illuminates the electric window switches, and so are the two that light up the heater dial surrounds. Such are the joys of owning a 190. It's a learning thing and when you've struggled with the job once and completed it successfully, you feel really pleased with yourself.

In summary

First time it hurts, second time its gorgeous!

If you catch my drift, ladies......

What wattage are the bulbs in the dash cluster (i.e where the speedo etc. are)?

is it a 3W on the right and a 5W on left? or are they the same?

Rob.

Haynes says 3W for the dash lights.
Previous owner of mine put 5W in for some reason and they caused a bit of heat damage by the looks of it.
Doing the same job myself at the moment.
There is also another 3W at the bottom of the dash

Put clearly, they are all 1.2w except the ignition charge light which should be 3w.

If you put stronger ones in sooner or later you will get scorching or burn damage to the plastics.

Apart from the heater control knobs and they should be 0.4w. ;)
