Repair section for front wing

While I have the wheels off and the wing liners out I thought I would clean the back of the wing where it was rusting. Cleaned it alright, now a gaping hole. As the rest of the wing is in really good condition I wonder if it would be possible to repair this one. What I thought of trying is to cut off the grotty corner of the wing back to some good metal and if possible replace it with a section cut from another wing. Obviously the trick will be to find a wing that hasn't already started to go in the same place. So does anyone by any chance have a scrap wing with that particular piece in good nick that they could cut a lump out of for me, I've got nothing to loose by giving it a go and would rather try a decent repair than just use body filler. The other side doesn't seem to be as bad but I haven't poked at it properly yet! So a piece for the other side as well would be a bonus if possible. I would of course pay for any postage/delivery costs in advance, I live in Newcastle.

Hi Davey,

Might be easier to find a replacement wing in good condition to swap it with? Plenty of 190s out there in scrap yards these days, or if it's a nice car a new wing could be a good solution :)

Thanks Will, yes I suppose I always have the option of replacing the wing but that would mean getting it painted straight away. I did have the intention of having both front wings painted and also the bonnet which has some stone chips. It just seems such a shame to disturb the whole wing for such a small repair, if it could be possible to save it. If the repair didn't turn out too good then at least the car would look tidy until I had the time and money to do the full front end.

Thing is I can migweld, not an expert or anything but confident enough to have a go. If it turns out ok, all well and good but if it looks s**t then there is always plan B when I have the cash. So if anybody has the bit's I am still up for a crack at it.

I suppose I could start and look around for some secondhand wings. Anyone know of any good breakers in the North East, just out of interest how much do new ones cost from the dealer? How did yours turn out then Shrekkie? I knew that at some point or other the wings would have to be painted and I am planning on having the bonnet done at the same time as there are a few stone chips on the front edge. Anyway it's too bloody cold and damp at the minute to mess around with paint and stuff, I might just fill it for now until the weather warms up. I have plenty of other things to look at in the meantime.

Well I live near to the MetroCentre. Never knew about the place in Byker. Any others? I'll look up their number and see what they've got. Nice one mate! You have a 2.0 diesel don't you? Mine seems to have a case of the kangaroo's when changing up through the box unless you are very gentle with the gearchange. I know a bloke who has his own place who is ex main dealer and he says it is called the Bonanza effect, I've never heard of that. He says that is is caused by the tight loop in the throttle cable and as the engine flexes it pulls on the throttle causing the car to lurch. Apparently there was a mod for it, you could get a longer left hand drive cable and bracket that allowed a bit more freedom. He said he might have the details somewhere at home but he thinks now that he has chucked them out, unless there is an old timer still working in the dealers workshop he reckons nobody will remember anything about it. Just thought you might be interested. Does your car have this peculiarity. I am a bit suspicious of the engine mounts on mine though as I can easily shake the engine around by the rocker top and I am not exactly built like Geoff Capes. I might change them and see if it improves.

i've never heard of that...................i suppose it is possible if the engine mountings are that bad,but if they were that bad you would have noticed it in other ways, loads of movement in the transmission, excess rocking on starting.........................btw you have a pm ;)

lisbon autos in sunderland recently had 2 190's in,dont know if he still has them
wellington lane autos quite often get 190's in...............got to be quick there, otherwise they sold to nigerians ans shipped to africa....lol
