in january i got my hands on a mercedes limo 300D in relativly good condition (not a rusty one and ran well). needed a few bits doing to it to get it tidy again mostly interior touch up and a good service and general fix up. Plan is to get it nice then drive it across euroland and then sell her. this is how she was when i bought her: ![]() list on things to do at this point: replace one of the windows on the rear door new bonnet sort the heater clean up inside good service now ive started to get my hands dirty and its going well but im findling lots more things that need my attention. its pretty rust free, little bits here and there but nothing more than half a days work. the poor window fitting had left the thing very damp so a lot of the carpets are in very poor condition and because its a limo its going to prove difficult to replace. going throught the car some one has been fitting all sorts of electrics such as neon lights and speakers and its pretty messy and proving to be a big job to sort out all this wiring. ive replace the glow plugs and had a new battery and its starting perfectly now (before it wasnt very good in the cold). However! since this, i cant get the thing to switch off. take the key out and the engine keeps on going and it has to be switched off by emergency stop on the fuel pump. i believe this is probely a grounding problem but if you have any advice this would be VERY welcome. next jobs are to go and see a breaker for the bonnet, some replacement chrome, and hopefuly some bits for the heater. Pictures of its current state: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() My friend mat eating his lunch like a rich man ![]() ![]() Broom holding up the bonnet ![]() ill try and keep a few updates on my progres. im having a lot of fun with it at the moment and im hoping to have something quite nice and tidy when im finished. |

cool, looks like you could sleep comfortably in the back of there. Have you had any difficulties with insurance seeing as it would technically be a modified vehicle? I think your engine shut off problem might be a vacuum thing? |

it came out the factory like that, its technicaly a 300D LWB. insurance is quite reasonable it can be put onto a classic policy and only thing to declare would be the tinted windows. however classic policys dont like people of my age and its off the road so i just insure it for £16 a week when i need it through my own insurance on a temporary policy. and i have had some one mention it might be a vacuum problem so im going to be testing that tomorow. its not shown in the pictures but there is a bench seats that folds up so its has 7/8 seats however i took that out because it was in the way and i didnt want to damage it. Allthough it did cross my mind to find a way of getting a bed in the back

Very nice, I love these cars, pure class. The shutoff problem is very likely to be vacuum related, there is a vacuum line that runs from the engine, to the ignition barrel and then back to the shutoff valve (very close to the lever your currently pressing to shut it off). If its just leaking rather than totally disconnected then you may find that if you rev it after turning the key off it pumps up the vacuum and shuts itself off. It could be a faulty shutoff valve or ignition barrel but most likely to be the vacuum tubes. |

Very cool indeed. I had the same running on problem with my 190d. I didn't get round to investigating it, but it has just cured itself though strangely. How old are you may I ask? |

yea it turned out to be the vacuum, there were two hoses that went to the dash for adjusting the headlights which i had unpluged when i took the centre console out. poped those back into the switch and it runing like a dream again! ive made a bit of progress. found a lot of rust in door by the sills which ive been treating today aswell as a few other light patch's so thats coming along nicely. yesterday i riped out sooo much wiring that just wasnt needed. had hands free kits, alarms and ICE that just wasnt conected to anything. i have a few more pics but they are on my phone so you will have to wait! ![]() going shopping for bits tomorow and going to make a start on fixing the heater. also im 20 Edited by p1RATE, Thu Apr 8, 2010 6:52 pm.

some more pics ![]() i started remove all unessesary wires and i was quite suprised how much i was taking out from behind the dash, lots of wires attached to nothing for alarms and hands free kits. just have to sort out the sterio cables and also adress the elecrtical problem with the heater. ![]() i moved onto taking off the door cards to have a look at what rust has got into the door. the door cards turned out to be fairly damp so i started to worry. ![]() there was some rust around the windows and some in the rubber seals in the doors. i thought this could end up being quite a big job but today i got started on treating it and it apears to be quite manageable. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

A lot of potential there , but a lot of work to get it back up to spec . A friend just bought a near identical car , same model , also in Black , from an undertaker - his is in pretty good condition and he's just using it to ferry his kids to school - he's now 'daddy cool' as his are the only kids who get dropped off in a limo every day Certainly beats a people carrier .Puts me in mind now to look for a W126 stretch limo

update time. cant say ive made much progress on this the time i had planned to spend on the car i spent the month touring round europe and have been short on cash since! Ive started going at it again this week and its making me happy again! ive got some new carpets made up which I'm waiting for and a bit of fiberglassing to repair a couple of pannels in the back where speakers have been fitted. recently ive started sorting out some white walls. make a huge change to the apperance of the vehicle. at some point I'm going to have to lower the front end to give it a better stance, without loosing too much clearance. ![]() ![]() |

Mate she looks gorgeous with the whitewalls I used Cobra springs they give a nice drop with the wheels you have to lose the arch gap without it looking silly no offence meant just with it being a limo I am sure you dont want it slammed
