I've got a spare battery. It came as an extra leisure battery with the camper. It's a "maintenance Free Calcium battery" a Halfords HCB 085. I put it on charge this evening, but the charger showed a full charge. It wasn't charging, so I took it off. I know it says "maintenance free" but it has the removable filling caps on it.. Should I top it up and try it on the charger again? Or is it gubbed?

What voltage you getting from it when off charge ? Lead calcium batteries very rarely vent and really shouldnt need topping up. I have never owned one so dont have practical experience but the theory is the liquid is far less likely to need venting, so your far less likely to need topping up. If its been deep cycled lots then its worth a check before chucking it. Top up water is extremely cheap. Double check but I think calciums still mainly vent the water only so battery water is most likely all you need if they look low. |

I just topped it up with deionised water and put it back on charge. It looked pretty low when I opened it. It is charging now, but there's a right stink of burnt metal coming off it. I'm not comfortable going to bed and leaving this overnight. I think it's needing dumped. Edited by b1gf00t, Thu Apr 8, 2010 2:33 am.
